I'm curious as to the Tr1Kes's unsprung weight.
Has anyone weighed the front suspension bits - upright, rotor, caliper, wishbones?

Some, not all parts:
Lower wishbone: 1900 gr Upper wishbone: 870 gr Fender frame: 1060gr Steering arm joint: 320gr Upper joint: 390gr Lower joint: 456gr Brake pad plate: 1057gr brake disk: 4,2kg
Perhaps one of the newer builders can weight some parts, because I am missing some: Mounting plate: ? gr Bearing house: ? gr Brake caliper + pads: ? gr

This afternoon received my modified shocks. Car is on bricks, front shocks removed. Before installing them I put a scale under the front wheels.
I measured 29,8 kg of unsprung weight per front wheel. Total mass of my tR1ke is about 358 kg, for a car this is very low.
However is 30 kg unsprung weight to 365 kg is relative high? What are common ratios?

I didn't weigh the uprights but I did drill a 50mm hole through both the upright and caliper plate to mirror the cast hub and also cut all the edges off the caliper mount, this saved 300 grams on each side. It doesn't affect stiffness or strength in any way. Andy

I don't think 30kg is especially heavy for a standard kit, most kits use the donor cars upright which would probably add even more weight and look bad as well. The biggest weight saving would be to change the focus hubs for ally ones if it can be done. Rally Design sell a complete lightweight kit that bolts straight on, or they do in theory but you have to be lucky and hope you're sent a good set.

There is not much to lighten on the unsprumg weight. i noticed the tires may be the heaviest part of unsprung weight. i wouldn't state the upright assembly is exessivly heavy given the forces it needs to cope with. I think the biggest weight saving can be done on the rims. The one I use were remarkable light for 17"wheels (7.5kg).
Besides, These kits are street kits and no desert racers and I haven't read any complains on the unsprung weight regardless wheel tire size. i wouldn't be suprised if the unsprung weight of 15"rims+tires vs 17" would be significant or even be lighter. Rubber really adds weight!

Yes wheels are your best way to save weight, mine are 16x7 and are 6.5kg but OZ do the same wheel in magnesium and they are 4.5 kg but technically not road legal, I was very tempted :-) I do think that weight out on the corners isn't a bad thing, though I reckon there is a large amount of weight to be saved in the nose cone but I will say having driven mine a bit now at 315kg I think its light enough for now.

Measuring: So total unsprung weight is: 29,8 kg Wheel and nuts are: 15,3 kg That leaves suspension for 14,5 kg

That is quite heavy for bodywork, about half that would be a good :-)

Watch out not to get airborne when you loose all the weight! At a certain point I think a little (mechanical) downforce can't hurt. Aquaplaning gets easier, bumps at high speeds are more dangerous... With a flat bottom like the tr1kes have, you should consider this... Remember the Mercedes crash at Spa (Webber?)...
