If you thinking of saving time and money i would aim for the youngest car you can find as older ones seem to be having problems with rusted botls sheering and the like. The engines are burst proof so 150k isn't a problem though a lower mileage one is obviously better. I have stripped a 150k engine and was amazed at how little wear there was, i think it depends on how thrashed they have been!
You should not really need to replace the bushes as the original mazda ones seriously tough which will also save a lot of time. i have just purchased a mk2 which mot has just expired with 145k and it drives amazing, no slack in the suspension at all, even the shocks are still tight. I picked it up for 890 as the sills had rotted which is a common problem with mx5's and it is a 6 speed too!
hope this gives you an idea

"A days work" You must be bionic!!!!
If you are an experienced mechanic with all the right tools and everything comes apart ok, maybe. But when i had to replace a rear bearing the lower upright bolt took me 2 hours and sledge hammer to remove and the hub needed a 20 ton press to get the drive shaft off....
Regarding safety i have heard some horror stories about the cheaper poly bushes you can buy and the better ones are some £300 a set, mazda spent one hell of a lot of money developing their bushes and they are quality items, also they are easy to check. I say all this because the original post was about building an exocet cheaply and quickly by someone with limited mechanical skill and replacing all the bushes is definitely a labour of love (an awful lot of labour!!!)

they also easilly wear out over the 20 years mot of our cars are.
it took me 4 hours to replace the rear end bushings including putting solid diff mounts in. thats with removing arms, pressing out, and pressing in. it doenst take that much time, improves handling a TON even over NEW OEM bushings.
just becuase it is OEM doesnt mean it is great. if that was the case, why build an exocet?
