Hi there!
After doing some research for several weeks, I ordered a Tr1ke kit last friday at Bas (kitcars.nl). I have been in contact with all 3 dutch Tr1ke builders and spend several phonecalls with Bas to iron out some dislikes on the left steering version before placing the order. I am looking forward to start this project.
I have been searching for a suitable donorbike for 2 weeks and after some reseach I concluded a damaged bike may be not worth for dissassembly. The conclusion is based on several adds on the net where dissassembled bike parts have been put for sale. The needed parts needed for a Tr1ke will add up to 1990euro (without rear wheel and damaged cilinder on one add) but the total amount of parts of the R1 was 5500euro in total. The seller managed to sell the frame for 850euro and the fairings for 550euro. doing a simple math shows the purshase of a 3390euro R1 would get me even with buying a damaged bike(2000-2500euro) or a dissassembled puzzle.
IMO there are several disadvantages of not buying a 100% R1:
-Buying a motor doesn't show the milage because this is not provided with the add.
-According one add the dissassembler couldn't remember the milage on the gauge ( )
-It is not likely you'll receive all needed bolts and nuts to reassemble a dissassembled bike AND I have no experience disassembling an R1 at this moment. This route is a trainwreck already.
It became clear to me I am in need for scratchfree fairings and neat frame to get even with the price of a damaged bike. Two dutch Tr1ke builders mentionedit should be possible to sell most parts and end up in the 500-1000 euro range for the needed parts eventually which sounds pretty good IMO.
Because of this I was in search for a donorbike in the 20000-35000km range, black wheels, silver swing arm, low milage and good fairings with an easy selling colorsheme. Unfortunately, setting up a milage/price ratio is not useable which makes it a PITA to chose the desired bike.
Last saturday I paid a visit to a R1 for sale and I thought this was the ticked I am in need for. The owner has this bike for only 10 months, found a girlfriend(+2kids) and moved to a new home(halfbuild) and recently purshased a new station wagon for his new famely . The rear tire is square and the outer 1.5cm as new and it was quite oblious the owner didn't put on the milage on this tire by himself. The PREVIUOS owner nearly polished the clear coat of the decals and it was clear to me the bike has been loved with silk gloves. The motor and fairings didn't show any oil leaks too!
The bike sounded as smooth as snot exept the light mechanical noise in the head which seems normal to me. Given the milage of only 20330km I reconed it was useless to make a testdrive at -12C and I offered him the highest bid placed on the net which was still 250 euro lower as he was asking for. I thought is was pretty useless offering him a lower price... so I offered him a price in between 3000-3500euro which seems to be in harmony when selling unnnedded parts.
In short: we have a deal!
I hope to pick up the bike and make the transfer this week and start making a huge pile of left overs ;D
I guess there is no way back anymore in this project LOL!!
Because the estimated deliverytime is approx 2 months for the kit I will try to order most needed parts in short time notice. First things on my list is a small welding machine and a hoist. Ater reading most threads over here it became clear to me the welding is prio #1 and keep the assembly to an absolute minimum until after she is powder coated. I do intend to do all the welding when the skelletton is updide down to minimize the direct view on the welds which should end up in a clean build.
Before receiving the kit I will definately find more questions as desired and I hope this forum will show it's potential .
Euhm.. first thing to order is the handbrake caliper. After dissassemble of the bike this will be the best place to start. I am planning to weld(outsource) the caliper bracket to the swingarm first.
regards,
Erik
