Well.
The retractor fuse keeps blowing so it would appear I have a dud ground somewhere. Would this effect the tachometer? I am not sure as it does not go near the cluster. Also I have found that the horn is not working. But the relay clicks when you press the horn, so something is getting that far.
I am waiting on an ohm meter to go through my grounds, but I am really at the end of my knowledge base. Thinking about paying to get a pro in

Have you checked the circuit sheet on the back of the instrument cluster?

Yeah. Took a look earlier. No breaks. But. Might get another clutter from somewhere to test. Does anyone have a spare? Happy to pay postage to and from. If it does work I am happy to pay for it at the going rate.

Don't give up on it it is going to be some thing very easy to fix.. and you can kick yourself around the garage later for not seeing it at first look.. Do you have 12v to/at the horn.. If you don't have a test lamp or meter just make one from a bulb and socket and some short wires.. Hook to the G/R wire to horn and a good bear/clean ground.. If that check is good ground lamp to horn mount bolt then case of horn to see if it lights. If it does, smack the horn with a hammer some times they stick inside.. Which fuse and size are you blowing.. What do you do the blow it..(turn on lights) what have you removed from the harness (switchs and relays and wire runs).. With the tach do you have power and ground to the cluster plug at the cluster?? Again don't give up..walk away for a bit..

I would offer to send my spare one over but it is now in bits.
Are all block connectors connected? There's a group of 3 large ones (2 white, 1 green that) that feed the stereo and heater blower. when i disconnected these the dials died. Im assuming at least one of these is part of the dials circuit.
Other than that all i can think of is checking the BLK/YEL wire as it splices off to a few things.

Well I think I have cracked it.
I checked all my grounds, and all have good connections.
Tracing the black and white wire from the instrument cluster and there was a break which my cousin (a mechanic!) joined back up after we removed the immobiliser. It looks like we have some mixed up wiring. I now have 2 black and white wires that were cut and joined at the same point. Tracing all these back they go to the following:
Ignition coil (rear of engine) Tachometer Ecu Diagnostic connector
Originally the tach was connected to the diag connector and the ecu to the ignition coil.
The big question is which goes to which? According to my diagrams both the tach and diag connector go to the ignition coil and the ecu does not have a black and white wire from it. So I am a bit confused?

The B/W wire should go to all 4 places coil, ecu, tach, dia box.. On the ECU the B/W wire is between a light green/yellow and a light green/red.. have you checked with an OHM meter the 4 wires one to the others at the end of each wire coil, ecu, tach, dia box.. There is only a problem with the tach not moving. Have you checked to see if the needle is on the wrong side of the stop peg the needle should sit on..

Well after connecting all 4 wire i now have a working tachometer.
What a nightmare.
Thankyou all for your help.
at this rate i will see you at stoneleigh.

Hi All I have gone and done the same decided I would strip out old wires radio washers etc and no I don't have a rev counter working. It is driving me mad have spent 2 days trying to sort it out. It started with the head lights not working properly and hazed lights. I have rewired these and they work. But no rev counter. All the cables I cut I joined together. There is a thin yellow and blue cable going to the instrument panel is this the rev cable, if so were do I connect it to. Im thinking it might be easer to rewire the rev counter but I don't have a clue what to do on car wiring so any help out there be great. Otherwise I will need to buy a new loom.
