It is indeed being advertised for 2.0 litre but the factory chassis is still designed to use the IB5 gearbox. This is due to it's compact dimensions. The 2.0 litre hubs and driveshafts are also different, so if you do want a 2.0 Sonic7 then I would recommend contacting a company like Jubillee motor spares in Birmingham who will provide you with the parts you require from a 1.8 minus the engine and then buying a brand new 2.0 litre Zetec as these are available from about £650 + VAT from various sources. If you go down this route, you won't need to strip a donor car on your driveway and you will then have enough new content for your car to qualify for a new plate as opposed to an age related plate. 200bhp maybe limit of an IB5 in a road car but the Sonic7 is only half the weight of a Focus and therefore the stresses are far less in relative terms. The Sonic7 will be available to customers in Australia via our Australian distributor www.southam.com.au and a Sonic7 will be heading over there with our next shipment. RTR is this why i have a bit of play in my rear wheel bearings? do the 1.8 bearings fit the 2.0 litre drive shafts?

I did have a lot of play but i fitted 2ltr rear wheel bearings, after i put the wheels on and had the driveshafts in I tightened the nut for the driveshafts up and the play was taken up.

Hi all, I'm also going down the route of getting a 2.0 into the sonic. Not sure if its worth the hasle for about 10-20 extra horses but we shall see. Can sombody explain the issue with the flywheel? I was under the impression that it was only the clucth and the acuator (ie all 3 pieces) that needed to be replaced. For obvious reasons in that the spline count on the MTX 75 is differnt to the IB5. However I though that the flywheels were the same on the 1.8 and the 2.0?

Yeah well the IB5 is hard to get hold of here the mk1 was released late and didnt sell that well here. Is it hard to fit the mtx75? Hi Talldude, I'm also in Australia, we have a good supply of the IB5 box here because they are used in the fiesta. I think they are still used in the current fiesta with the 1.6 litre sigma engine, the UK guys can also get this combo in the older focus but I don't think they came here in that configuration. Lee

The 2.0 litre flywheel is bigger than the 1.8 flywheel. You will need to obtain a 1.8 Litre engine flywheel as well as the 1.8 clutch kit.
As for the IB5 gearbox from a fiesta, the internals are the same as the focus IB5 but the housing is different, the starter motor is in a different position so it won't match up with the engine. I had a Ford gearbox specialist show me the difference, it's basically a mirror image.
You may only get 25bhp difference but it's the capacity for upgrading the power in the future. The 1.8 and 2.0 engines are basically the same units so upgrading for each will be roughly the same. A good exhaust system, air filter and ECU can easily get you to 150-160bhp From a 2.0 litre engine. Then there's the Rotrex supercharger (220-300bhp) or a turbo unit (180-240bhp). I looking to go the Turbo upgrade next year.

So much for ford dealers! I spoke to two and they were convinced that the flywheels were the same and the only possibility was the mounting points for the clutch pressure plate.
Are there any suppliers that you know of that supply resonably priced flywheels? I would prefer lightened however the cheapest lightened standard I can find is demon tweeks at 270. Any other suggestions?
If the flywheel diameter and thus the ring gear has more teeth then does this mean that starter motor is different also? Surely the monting points for the motor is in a different place if the wheel is effectively wider?

The flywheel for the 2.0 litre is considerably thicker, that's why you need The 1.8 flywheel, you would never get the gearbox to mate with The engine. The starter motor mounting is exactly the same for both engines. I will take some pictures of the 2.0 flywheel so you can see the difference. If you go to a scrappy you will pick up a flywheel for about 20 quid, the same goes for eBay.

ah I see, thanks for the info
I cant use a second hand wheel as the car is made of new components so far. I can get a new new from ford however.

Why can't you use a second hand wheel, most of the guys on here that get new registrations have used donor parts including engines and gearboxes. Ade for example has just registered his ST170 Rocket with a 12 plate.

Hi
A quick question: which seats did you use? I assume they are ADR compliant. I have done som esearching for seats that will work in the Sonic and be ADR compliant but they seem to be too wide.
Thanks
