It was just a logical guess. I'm not certain football rosettes are worn much these days, it seems to be shirts and scarves.....far more lucrative for the clubs.
Daughter did do riding (no horse owned I'm pleased to say).
Perhaps a spark from the bench grinder might jump across....... but you may get more than the "death stare".
You'r doing well with the cleaning and painting, looks very professional.

Yeah I considered letting some sparks fly wild but I dont think the garage would be too cosy when she throws me some bedding out and then locks the door!

Brake RefurbSo, brakes were next on my hit list! I had watched a couple of video guides and also used the threads on this forum and decided to tackle my own refurb of them including new seals and pistons etc. I got a full seal & piston replacement kit of a certain auction site (reputable seller with good reviews and basically sells all seals and brake products). The lost cost approx £60 which included delivery. So, I stripped the calipers down and first thing was to get them against the wire wheel and remove all the crud etc. Anywhere the wire wheel on the bench grinder couldn't reach, the die grinder with attachments did, so these came back to a decent standard. As with most things, it seems a shame to paint them when they are nice and crisp again but paint it is! I got some caliper paint (E-Tech) from the 'rainforest' website which is well reviewed and came as a decent package, this was approx £26 and more than enough paint for 2 sets of calipers I would say. mine have had multiple coats and still half tin left for any touch ups in the future. The paint is brushed on however not sprayed. Maybe next time I would save time and have them blasted and coated professionally instead, but I wanted to at least attempt them myself Finished product as above, with new seals, pistons, and bolts cleaned up. For the refurb I definitely had to use the videos on YT otherwise I would have missed certain things. Replacing seals and pistons is straight forward and not too time consuming with the right 'picks' and pliers but the longest job was the painting. As said above, if I was doing this again I would probably have the blasted and coated Next update will probably be to strip the inlet manifold and start cleaning that out and tidying it up so I will let you know how all that goes. Once it comes to the engine, it will be 'search the forum and ask questions' kinda time! Cheers all

Morning all, was a decent weekend weather wise so decided to have a bit of time in the garage. Only simple cosmetic stuff again (as usual) and decided to tackle the inlet manifold/ surge tank and then even had a touch of being a saddo and even gave the EGR a lick of paint (please tell me i'm not the only one who has done this?) haha Anyway, pics incoming as usual! Inlet Manifold/ Surge TankI have a 2000 donor, 1.8 non VVT and to remove the manifold, I had to do it in 2 sections. not sure if this is correct or not but it just seemed so much easier. As always it started off grubby looking... I used some carb cleaner and a gentle approach to clean out the insides, its surprising how much rubbish actually comes out but rewarding once its all dried off and clean. I will be replacing the gaskets for surge tank and throttle body. Took the old faithful die grinder to it with wire brush attachments and it started to look half decent again. This was followed by two coats of etch primer.. Once this has cured, I chose to spray it in VHT Silver paint, two coats of this and it looks nice and fresh again... All the brackets were painted in a VHT Matt Black paint. Any earth/ ground spots will be wired/ sanded back to ensure a solid earth connection can be made. I then did the same with the support brace bracket thing.. I then took to a whole new level of boredom and cleaned up the EGR. It will be getting blanked off but the unit/ valve and sensors will all be left in place and connected. This was painted using a very thin brush and some good old trusty hammerite paint! Anyways, that's enough sleep material for now! I will update once I have more things cleaned up. The missus is loving the spare bedroom at the minute, everything is getting cleaned/ painted, then bubble wrapped and placed in the spare room! Have a good day all!

Morning all, Thought id post my recent progress on here, just the usual cleaning parts up and painting etc, nothing too exciting im afraid. Starting off with the Timing Belt Plate and Covers, these were the same as the rest of the parts and covered in crud and dirt. Obviously no use of the wire wheel on these but the good old 'Wonder Wipes' once again came to the rescue, these things are immense! Just some before and after pictures of the covers and plate. Sat on the room floor watching TV, there's worse ways to spend an hour and at least it ticked this job off And the final pic of all the pieces together, vast improvement even if they will hardly be seen lol

Bit of engine cleaning/ tidying up this time. So the start with, I have the cylinder head off the car as will be having this cleaned and new head gasket etc when it comes around to it but in the meantime I decided to clean the block and sump up. Along with this, I figured I would plan in advance as I would like to boost it further down the line so now makes perfect sense to remove the sump and fit an oil return whilst access is easy. Few pics of before and during the cleaning process So, parts wire wheeled using the die grinder and then brake cleaner used to remove the loose and excess dirt etc. I then painted the sump using a VHT silver paint. Now, time to start painting the block. It's too cold outside and well, the missus is out with the women so now would seem a perfect time to start taking over the kitchen. Obvious reasons, warm, dust free environment, im sure she will understand! haha So, workmate set up in the kitchen and black engine enamel and brushes at the ready... Two coats later (full day to cure between coats) and its looking smart Quick test fit of the sump on top to see how it will look together and I am happy with the outcome Then I fitted the oil return an10 fitting to make things easier in the future. I took the sump to work and had it drilled/ tapped there, then fitted it whilst also putting JB Weld on the threads. Before doing this, I had cleaned all the old gasket off both the block and sump and will reseal it all using Permatex Ultra Black, new bottom end half moon seals etc. I will also fit new rear main seal and crank seal Out to the garage and I tackled the Oil Cooler.. Quick wipe and clean up using the Wonder Wipes and then fitted a new gasket/ 'O' Ring for the cooler. Refitted the cooler to the block and torqued this up to approx 37NM as this is the info I found online.

Over the weekend I wanted to start creating a clean environment to start building the skate back up in (I appreciate it wont stay clean for long but oh well). I painted the rest of the garage (side walls), fitted a halogen heater above the workbench and then laid carpet tiles down on the floor. I can honestly say the carpet tiles have made a huge difference and taken a lot of the chill away. This should make it a bit nicer to work inside. Plus, I can now finally move things from the spare bedroom to the garage and keep the missus happy! I will pop back and update once more progress has been made. Enjoy your days all!

Good day o55ie
Thanks for the nice clear photos and update. It beats me how you got away with having the engine in the kitchen AND painting it!! I like the carpet tiles. Probably a good idea for when Mrs 055ie takes umbrage at your kitchen activities and suggests a night 'camping'.
I look forward to your next update.

Haha, I am awaiting the camping trip don't worry, I made sure tea was in the oven before she came home to try soften the blow! She took the painting part of it quite well compared to when I was sat on the room floor wiping the timing belt covers off. that one invited all sorts of questions such as "does everyone building them sit on a carpet with oily parts?" This was shortly followed by silence and a look which I can only describe as threatening

LOL!!!
Getting the tea into the oven was a good move. As for "sitting on the carpet with oily parts" the mind boggles!
You certainly like to push your luck. I found that when the atmosphere became 'artic' a decent bunch of flowers helped the thaw.

The strip down looks like it's going really well. Those carpet tiles will make a big difference when you start assembling it all back together. Have you ordered your kit yet?

Not yet, coming down in Feb and hoping to place my order end of March. Was meant to be ordering last year but the kit funds got depleted last year when the partner suffered a brain haemorrhage and I had to have time off work to care for her, hence why everything at the minute just involves paint and brushes haha. Really looking forward to getting down and seeing things in the workshop, deciding all the things I want and then signing/ submitting my order form! Lol

We'll be at the Practical Classic and Restoration show at the NEC 18-20th March if you wanted to visit the show and have a look at the cars there.

Yeah she's on the mend, sometimes a bit zoned out but that's when I take advantage and start moving car parts inside the house to work on! ha. Never considered nipping to the NEC but that could be good, thank you. What's the current waiting list? I know it wont be on the road for this summer but as long as I can catch some nice weather to be working on it I don't mind. I checked the NEC website and it shows the Practical Classic show is 18th - 20th? Crufts is on the 10th - 13th unless Iv read it wrong? I am a huge dog lover but, rather have the Exo!

You're correct, got the dates mixed up... which is good as I was looking at hotels for the wrong weekend as well!! It's halved the price of the hotel putting in the correct dates
