I completed my Exocet build in 2014 and ended up selling it in 2016 which I've regretted pretty much ever since. I've been keeping an eye out for another MEV and recently spotted a 2012 Sonic 7 on ebay in need of tidying.
I went to see the car in Leamington Spa a couple of weeks ago - it looked OK and ran nicely, but was generally a bit rattly and loose. Most importantly though, it was on the road, so I took a gamble and bought it. One of the issues was that the brakes were binding slightly so I spaced the pedal box out with washers before setting off home - it took longer to do than expected but solved the issue. I made it back to Milton Keynes in one go without any problems.
The car has various issues - if anyone could offer me any suggestions on how to address them I'd be very grateful.
The first one is electrics: this weekend I decided to try fitting a Race Technology DASH2 instrument panel and came unstuck. Ideally I'm looking at removing the control board but it's more complicated than I was expecting and I'm not clear what the circuitry on it does (other than the fuel gauge and switch logic). Has anyone done this?
The engine runs on when changing gear. I think the clutch pedal switch should sort this (it didn't have one) but I'm not sure where to connect it. I have the build guide and wiring diagram but they contradict each other anyway. Plus the yellow/orange wire currently goes to the rev counter??? Can someone tell me where the MEV loom meets the Ford one as I might need to take a look?
The steering is far too imprecise with a lot of slop. I think part of this may be to do with the arbitrary course the column takes over to the o/s and then back in to the rack. I'll probably take it closer to the pedal box so it's more straight but I'm also thinking of fitting a faster rack. Has anyone done this?
The front of the car currently skips all over the place. It's had the tracking done recently but that obviously didn't help much. Again, any suggestions gratefully received.
Finally I'd be interested to know any history on the car.
