So I've got a fair way through the dismantling now. The wiring loom is mostly out, but not completely. Front wings and bumper are gone, rear bumper still intact for now. The main issue I've run into at this point is trying to loosen the axle nuts. They are not keen to come off! A longer breaker bar is on its way.

Okay, I thought that tonight I'd adjust the steering column and give it a lick of paint, since it's out of the car. However, I've run into a problem. The IBG thread on this forum says to get about 30mm of the inner shaft sticking out, but I can only get it to 15mm then it won't go further. Also, the splined shaft keeps trying to telescope back into the column! Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Phil, looking good so far! The steering column has a nut/bolt on it that will stop the splines coming completely out of the rack. If you undo that (make sure you keep it when it comes off as you'll need it to put it back into the rack!!) you should be able to get the column all the way out. I assume this is also causing the telescoping issue you're referring to.

Cheers, J. I think we might be talking at cross purposes, though. I was attempting to do the following thing that apparently is necessary (I should probably leave this until I've actually ordered the kit and received the chassis!)

Okay, so I've completely disassembled the steering column and worked out what's what. I'm going to remove the circlip that lives inside there and then put it back together, then stop messing with it until I have the chassis and can tell what length it needs to be.
Also, rear axle nuts are loose thanks to a new 750mm breaker bar and a lot of heaving!

More progress made, but not very fast! It's pretty much to the stage now where I have to try to remove the bolts holding the body on, and then lift the body off (with the engine hoist I haven't assembled yet). The end of the steering column did not want to detach from the rack, but following a tip on Russ' build thread, I stuck a large screwdriver against the end of it and whaled away on that with a lump hammer. The engine bay is looking pretty sparsely populated now: I'm deleting the ABS, and probably also the power steering - but I haven't decided for sure on that one. The wiring loom is completely out now, and somehow looks so much worse than when it was in the car: Sadly, everything has to go pretty much on hold until the start of January now - but maybe then I'll finally lift the body off and order the kit!

Looks like a good donor. When I do my second one, I am going to seriously think about keeping the power steering, but only if not too much faff.

Cheers, Russ. I probably went a bit overboard on the donor - the body isn't even rotten, so I hope all the underpinnings are solid when I clean the surface crud off. Wanted a Mk2.5 Sport for the 6-speed box, LSD etc.
I'm mostly concerned about the whole "exhaust doesn't fit" problem that I know you ran into.

Well, I've placed an order for an Exocet kit, and it should be ready sometime in the second half of February. I better get cracking on the dismantling and preparation straight after Christmas!

I chopped and welded my exhaust from a Mk2.5 to fit... it can be done, my engine is mk1, subframes mk 2 and mk2.5 torsen 2 lsd so a right miss match. But it works

Okay, now that Christmas is over it's back to work on the car. Happy to report that with the help of a willing friend and an engine hoist, the body is now off! One question - am I supposed to recover the handbrake cable from the shell? The instructions seem to skip over this.

Section 1 of the build guide states remove handbrake cables, don't forget the T piece at the split in the cables.
Section 8 of the build guide covers handbrake installation.

Okay, on re-reading it says "You can now remove the tank, filter, handbrake and cables." So it's not so much that the instructions skip over that point - more that I didn't read them very carefully!
Anyway, hopefully that's something I will be accomplishing this evening. Not bothering with the fuel filter, since I've bought a fresh one.
