Took Sonic for MOT to-day and a pass but..
The engine is from a 2004 Focus ST170
Minor Defect - Drive shaft joint cv boot severely deteriorated. Nerarside rear inner.
Looked on internet for repair advice but seems to vary depending on Focus model. Are special tools required? I have looked at boots that can be fitted with shaft in position, are they satisfactory?
Advisories - Three wheel bearings have slight play. Alloy uprights/hubs/bearings were purchased from MEV in Sept 2009.
Car has only done 1150 miles so surprised about the bearings.
Are the bearings adjustable? If so how? If not how are they removed and which ones do I need to buy?
I would normally go to a workshop manual but not an option.

Drive shaft replacements come with boots fitted, but you can save money by fitting after market boots, but will you get a tight seal and have you the tools to pull the shafts apart? If the box came from a 2004 ST170 then so will the shafts.
Front wheel bearing are taper and can be adjusted unless shot.
Rear bearings need around 230 Ft Lbs of torque. Often builders fail to achieve this as it can be a tough one unless you have the right tools.

rebuild cv shafts are like $35-55 get one of those. you have to take out the CV joint and drain oil if you pull off the cv shaft. you can get a boot but it is just better to get another cv because it was riped on the donar car which means it may be damaged already. They also sell CV rebuilds kit but it is a waste of time compared just getting a replacement.
Bearing should be tight if they are loose then you have to pull the wheel off and see it they are loose in the uprights. if they where not pressed in correctly by the outer race but by the inner that owould create a huge damage to the needle bearings.

There are four boots, an inner and outer on each side. One of the inners was described as "deteriorated" at the MOT but not split.
When the car was built I don't know if the boots were replaced.
Three of the bearings were described as "slight play" under 'advisory.
I am going to contact the builder of the car for some information.

If they are not split then just buy a replacement boot which may be hard to come by since they mainly sell the rebuild kits. If you take the uprights out you may get a better idea of what going on. Also did you try to tighten the main but holding the ground wheel on to the CV joint? It is under a dust shield and should be tightened to certain FT/LB thanks Brian

I have not done any work on the parts concerned. The CV joint is ok and the boot is not split but is "deteriorated". I will keep an eye on it and will probably try replacing it with a sticky split boot. I know there are different views about such boots but I will give it a try.
The front wheel bearings are taper. There is minimal 'play'. So little to do.
I contacted the person who built the car and he has provided me with useful information.
