Any reason that you can not fit chrome trim rings to the headlight units on the replicar ? by -Tojeiro 74-I see most cars of this style are fitted without the chrome rings, just seems a bit untidy to me with exposed screws. by -Tojeiro 74-

I sprayed the inside of the lexan covers to hide the fittings. Fitting the chrome rings once the lights are fitted to the shell proved impractical - there is not enough clearance between the ring and the lexan cover. YMMV.

The leading edge of the chrome ring will foul on the headlight covers (at least it did on mine when I trial fitted the headlights)

Cheers all, thought it might have been an issue with the covers but not been brave enough to cut mine out yet so wasn’t able to check.
In that the case I might paint the current chrome adjustment ring black which would hide the screws a little.
I will also paint the inside of the headlight cover black to suit current body colour, guess if I paint the car later I need another set of covers but was planning to get a spare set from Andy anyway.

The original cars did not have the covers so if you are looking at originality leave them off. Of course it is your car so do whatever pleases you.

Afternoon, looking at indicator stalks for front of my car, like the ones on the green car in this chat, can I ask, where did you get them?

Doubt the bulb wattage would be high enough, I saw some at the NEC Classic Car Show last year and on SVC stand at Stoneleigh - about £80 each which kicked that idea into touch.

What have other builders done regarding fixing the light covers to the body, self tappers ?
Never a big fan of self-tapping screws but the fibreglass around headlamp seems quite thick so looks feasible.
If this is the way to go any tips to prevent gelcoat or fibreglass lift as your tighten the screws.
Was considering aerospace nut-plates but looks difficult to fit given space and unknown fibreglass thickness at certain areas.
Also looked are rub-nuts but smallest M3 & M4 need 8mm hole.

Just an idea....but what about rivnuts, through the fibreglass, and through an appropriate washer at the back to take the strain of expanding the rivety bit (if you see what I mean)? That would give you proper threads to put sensible setscrews into.....like you, I'm not a fan of self tappers, especially if you may want to remove and refit in the future.

Why not use a small diameter set screw and bolt through GRP and a suitable washer?

I eventually went with self tappers. I couldn't find decent locations to drill completely through. It's ok, not great. Short tappers and care. I've removed them a couple of times, but I'm reluctant to do it frequently.

I have not drilled any holes yet but the fibreglass behind the area that will be drilled appears not to be flat which doesn’t lend itself nicely to a nut and bolt. Also looks too thick for a rivinut (even my extra long M4 ones) I’d like it to be easy to remove from front as I will be adding front wheel arches limiting access to back of headlight area. Now thinking about 3 or 4 small 90 deg (ish) brackets that I saw before on a Ferrari. Could bolt these brackets permenantly to the inside of the headlight recess (better surface) and have some M3 rivinuts for the cover screws. Would also move cover screws away form the very edge. by -Tojeiro 74-

This is one of those issues that can have a dozen solutions. You can't just drill through as some holes would appear inside the wing and some would be inside the headlight. My solution was to drill a larger hole, not all the way through, and epoxy in some nuts, works for me but still interested to hear how other builders have done this.

What did others use to cut out the headlight covers?
I have a dremel which seems like only option, just concerned about putting in too much heat and melting the edge.
Dremel then sander for the edge or better method?
Cheers
