Decided to cut some holes! The rear heat removal side. The Aluminium plate is a separator that will be glassed to the scoop. The rivnuts will fix the whole scoop to the engine cover. The folded flats will assist with the fibre glass attachment and will be hidden when in place. Here is a side view. and here is a top view. Sorry about the butchered folding. I do not spend much time making something that will be glued in place and covered in fibre glass attractive. Attachment is more important. Here is a view with the grill 'wired' in place! And a view of the intake side with the grill also 'wired' in place... I stuck a light in the engine bay to show the holes in context. Ditto for the front side. Side view perspective So now just need some fibreglass and resin. Fix the grills in place and drill and attach with bolts. And then pray that the concept works.

Like the idea Bruce. Interested to see if it works and copy. My similar idea was to have smaller holes at the front, larger at the back, but a horizontal divider with the right split to get the fast cold airflow to pull hot air from the engine bay. Have no idea if it would work though. I drew a side profile to show what I mean.
Alternatively I will use the intake to directly feed the air filter intake. Other option is cold air down the side pods and just exit holes at the back. It looks better with holes at the front though. I was going to wait until on the road, to see how the air feels as depending on the size of the front screen, might it work in reverse? I've heard/felt when younger with hair! that in open top cars, air comes backwards towards the front of the car into the cockpit, due to the vortexes? created by the front screen. Maybe you just made your self a heater? (good for UK, but probably not what you want in Australia ;-) )

Just put an offer on an 'almost finished' rocket. Hopefully it will be mine tomorrow... 1.8 Zetec needs gear shift linkage attention - fine tuning Has custom Radiator but needs connection to engine Needs hydraulic lines for brakes Unfinished dash and trim but has gauges etc fitted. Has lights mounted but not wired... Fingers crossed... that I get it. WHY? it is closer to road worthy than my Sonic and I want a car to drive. Then I can get the Sonic finished and then decide on what to do with the Locost build...

Worst case scenario it just lets heat out when stationary... I am also about to cut the holes in the side pods. I was just contemplating how that would work. Someone suggested just cut holes and glue (Sika) the mesh on the inside. Others have used a flat 1 mm frame riveted to the fibreglass sandwiching the mesh to the glass. Undecided but the weekend is looming...so unless the Rocket turns up in the driveway... I will be cutting some big holes in the side pods... Regards, BW p.s. I have similar vents in my engine cover but found that heat was still a significant issue until I cut a large hole in the engine cover , roughly 30cm by 15 cm , over the exhaust manifold. I fitted a wire mesh grill across the hole from the underside and fixed with PU adhesive. I found that heat would build up when at a standstill or in slow traffic. The engine cover became too hot to touch and that is in the uk with ambient temps of 18 to 24 degrees C. If your ambient temps are higher , it will be hotter. pic 1 pic 2 Pic 3

ok, That will be an experiment then... Just how hot it is going to get to..
Your headers are on the firewall side. Mine are on the number plate side. so the rear holes are almost directly above the exhaust.

I own a Rocket! now just have to finish that, then the sonic 7, then the Locost clubbie... Just as well I am in the WA sports car builders club... for the long haul.... Paid $13k Australian ($10,090 US) (7,124 GB pounds) 1800cc petrol Ford Zetec Engine 5 speed manual Ford transmission Full independent suspension Disc braking system Wheel size 15 inch Department of transport approval to build This Kit car is an unfinished project. The frame and body parts are painted with the engine and engine management installed and working. The gearbox is operational but will need fine turning. The cooling system is unfinished and has a custom made front mounted radiator. The disc brakes and handbrake are mounted and will need the hydraulic braking system finishing and have a full safety check. It has a new custom made steering column and a new fully independent coil and shock absorber suspension. The wooden dash board and wooden interior surround is unfinished with new gauges for fuel, oil pressure, water temperature, RPM, lights and a keyed ignition switch. Front and rear lights have been mounted and need to be connected to the wiring system.

I was under the impression that, to get a Rocket on the road in Oz, it needed to have a special nose cone and have the chassis strengthened significantly.
Have those rules changed?

Yep.. But too close to being finished and too good a price. The Nose cone appears to be correct.. This is the one in the kit Do not like the chances of getting the wings attached... certainly NOT before DOT... Found a bonus... They installed a $1000 plus billet steering column and willwood 4 pot front brakes. and here is the car 2 minutes after getting it off the trailer. Actually didn't need the brick behind the rear wheel as the Hand brakes are connected... Ditto for hydraulic brakes... ditto for completed cooling system... Only thing I can see is moving electrics to dash area... complete the dash and centre console. Side repeater lights locate and install, connect up wiring for indicators and rear high visibility brake light... Fuel tank secure and connect. Mount ECU without the zip ties.

Sonic update.. Decided that I needed to move the Sonic out of the Shed. It does mean that I have been more comfortable working on the Rocket which is now in the shed. Rocket is close to finish with seats and a bit of padding and DOT engineering compliance. I am in the process of getting the Sonic rear uprights fitted with support braces and bearing housings. That will make it a true roller. Put the Sonic back on a dolly so that makes moving it a bit easier while I wait for uprights. Will move it back in the shed as soon as Rocket has a number plate.

moved the Sonic back into the shed! Gave it a wash after being out side. You can see why! Also sprayed some WD40 on some of the bare metal bits... This was the real reason I moved it in Decided that I needed to get this build back on track. So cut up some metal for rear upright strength upgrade. Just need to make a decision about who welds them up. Then I will get bearing housings constructed. Actually, I am waiting for an ECU upgrade for my Rocket. Purchased a Haltech 550, wide band and Ignition Igniter. But I do need to finish the project anyway.

I did the welding: the two smaller bits are yet to be welded as I am unsure of the dimensions of the bearing housing. welded both sides. looks as good as the welds that someone else did on my rocket. Now to get some machining done. to get these bearings to fit. More coming.

You tell that the Rocket is not at home as I sent it to a tuner and a gas tester... thats also why I am working on the Sonic.
About to measure up and draw a bearing housing.... Sure I saw a rudimentary diagram somewhere.
