Hello I recently bought a sonic 7, the kit is at least 4 years old but has never been finished, when i investigated the car i discovered it was sold on this forum around june 2012 to a guy in the netherlands. Then it probaly did job as a dustcatcher for several years. In june i was lookin for an oldtimer car for a project and saw a sonic on a secondhand website if i compared prises it was cheap so i bought the rolling chassis with a engine in it The gaol is making it a LHD and hopefully register it legally in belgium, In belgium IVA doesn exist so the plan is to get it IVA in the uk then register it, and try to export it to belgium. Getting it trough IVA is possible but getting it registered in belgium will probaly fail as belgium is a stupid paper country. If in the end i cannot register it in belgium i will have to sell it in the uk, let's hope that isn't necesary I I I bet some of the guys may recognize i maybe. so i bought the kit in a fast decision together with my brother as a project for together. as it stands it looks good but nothing is bolted or reveted on. The polyester is just hanging en there is a engine in it but i don't know if it can run or not so the next thing was finding a suitable donor car. i was lucky and found a cheap focus 1.8 The next step is stripping the the donor and the sonic as far as possible so i can start from scratch This is as far as i am am the moment, i just have to pul the old engine out the sonic and get the engine out of the donor and refurbish it before i put it in the Sonic As for now the frame does not have a vin number, Can i choose my own vin number and put i in as long i don't use the i and o, Or do i have to contact dvla and will they say what number to use?

you can choose your own VIN. It must have 17 characters, do not use 1 and I or and O and 0. It should be stamped on to a plate and fully seam welded to the UK drivers side under the front cover. Letters must be at least 4mm high and have no gaps between them.

Good luck! Please can you do me a favour? Can you put the hazard warning lights on the donor and let me know what lights appear in the dash? Is it both left and right indicator warning lights? A Anything else?
Thanks

I think I saw that car for sale on 2ememain.be
look forward to your questions and seeing your build. There are several sonic owners active on here , we should be able to answer most questions.
Welcome and Good luck.

Hello mawdo81 I cant help you for the moment. I allready started to break down the donor. But i know someone who drives a focus mk1 as daily driver and will ask him for the hazard lights. Yes daydreamer i found the car on 2ememain.be, i bought it from a guy who makes lamborghini replica's and took this in as a trade but wasnt really interested in it and probaly needed the place because he had a hurry to sell it, the kit was almost complete, he gave alot of boxes with donorparts from a focus, only things missing was pedalbox, seats rear calipers and lots of hours Though i chose to start with a new donor as i don't know the milage of engine in it and thought it would be easier for making the wiring as i stripped it by myself.

Hi Mawdo81, my daily driver is a 2001 focus, both left and right indicators flash on the dash. The only other thing that flashes is the hazard switch itself.

I finally had some time to work on the sonic, i took out the engine of the donorcar and replaced the glutch aswell as the glutchpump while it was out. that's all i'm going to do on the engine for now, except for replace liquids and filters ... as i want to keep it low budget untill i'm sure i can get it on the raod here in belgium. The next job was relocating the belt without the servopump and aircopump. Alot of people do it like this so i went for the same solution, only thing i worry is if the belt has enough grip on the waterpump like this ? After this i placed the engine in the frame, it quite went easily, i only had tho customize the plastic that is around the gear levers I allready started to place the waterhoses to the front, what do the most people use to attach these, as they wil be unreachable once the body is on. I thought to revit i with steelband, any suggestion is welcome, Kevin

And another stupid question, i compared my two donor engines to find the engine number, is it the 5 digit number next to where the oilstick enters the engine ? As that is the only number that is'nt equal on the 2 engines it is logical but i find it a small number for a enginenumber.

It should be on that side but right next to where the engine meets the gearbox. On a totally flat bit, very hard to see, and it's probably been punched in with lots of dot punches, I rubbed chalk into it to read it properly.

Hi i think that is the kit i sold to a guy in the netherlands in 2012 i thought it must not have been finished because he didnt come back on the forum after an initial burst of enthusiasm nice to see it getting assembled now. The engine had done about 120000 miles and i put a new complete clutch in it and it had a joker quick shift gear change but it was a good runner then, although the alternator was siezed. happy building MOZ

Yes its probaly yours, i traced it back to the netherlands in 2012. I allready took the glutch out and put it in the new donor engine as i didn't know the state of the engine and the miles, also for iva/dvsa i thought it would be easier to proof where the engine was from as i had the whole car, i also found a joker pedal in the boxes with pieces Did you bought the kit new ? And if yes do you know from where. Was it Rtr. I only have a written paper of the last seller that it is a sonic 7 but that will probaly wont be enough for iva, maybe if i could track the original invoice that would help me.

Had finaly some time to work on the car, i stripped the donor completely so now its ready to go to the scrapyard Next thing to do is putting on the brake and fuel lines. I would like to use copper. What diameters do i have to buy ? I dont have a pedalbox yet, but i'm lookin for one to mount on the floor. And i would like to know the function of the third fuel line that is standard on the 1.8 zetec that is connected with air intake Can in remove it and just put a stop in the air intake ?

Its the evaporation charcoal canister purge line and yes you can delete it!
Don't scrap the wheels when you scrap the shell. I found a dealer that would take the shell as scrap metal if I removed all identifying marks. This kept the donor registered but sorned and makes it easier when registering the Sonic. Others have scrapped the donor as a car though.
I'd suggest copper nickel & its 3/16 or 5mm for the brakes & clutch.
