Hi,
Completed my Exocet last year. Really became a fan of the Mazda engineering so ended up buying a second MX5 (Mk1 1.6).
So the plan is to restore it (rather than strip it). So why the post? It suddenly occurred to me that I might be able to help any current UK builders out who have some spare parts that the Exocet doesn't use but I could do with. I know many parts are available on Ebay but thought a direct contact with current builders would be helpful all round. I would also be happy to share my knowledge.
So currently on my WANTED list (all Mk1 parts) are; 1. O/S door mirror (ideally red) 2. O/S and N/S door window/ door trim (needs to be straight and rust free) 3. Steering wheel 4. door kick plates 5. standard cross strut that goes across the top seat belt points
I'm sure there will be more parts in future, so if anyone wants to PM, go ahead.
Thanks

Uhm, not sure we can allow that on here, by your own admission you are building a MX5 not a MEV. Only joking, damm fine plan that man, I'm sure you'll pick up what you need and help a few Exocet builders out in the process.

Damm! first post in my new thread banned Could I appeal on the following grounds?? "Previously, i recycled an old MX5 into a new Exocet" "Now I'm just persevering an old MX5 ready to be turned into an Exocet.....one day" Just to rub salt into the wound.

Ha ha! I've done the same, alto I did the other way round buying an mx5 first which I decided to keep and slowly do up and found a crash damaged mx5 as the donor for my exocet. Weirdly both cars were v-specials as was a third car I went to look at which turned out to be a right dog so walked away before buying the ones I have now; it was purely coincidence honest! Not too hijack your thread, but I have regretted not keeping back some of the parts I sold which I realised much later I could have used on my own mx5 if it needed replacement components. I did manage to retain the alloys since they had virtually new tyres on. However it seems my dad has caught the bug and just bought himself a mk2 mx5 to play around with so he might have my alloys after all. So far I've swapped coil-overs back to standard shocks due to poor road surfaces, speed bumps etc. and the ride being way too firm and low, had the panasport alloys (rare apparently) refurbished, polished and colour changed and very recently had the vinyl hood replaced, the leather gear gaiter had long since perished so finally got round to fitting a new one. located an original rear brace bar for the rear subframe. its worth doing up the mk1's now they are classed as a classic and starting to go up in value

I also bought another MX5, our 4th in total. We sold our original MX5s and the third is the Exocet (which still isn't finished). My Exocet donor was a better car than the S Special I have now. I felt I had to have another one and keep this one long term. Unfortunately I had already sold a lot of my donor parts even given some away. Can't live without one now. Lol.

Engine looks good. How much work is it to strip to this level? I have some chrome kick plates if youre interested. They are the ones with mx5 on them...

Mr. Kiwicanfly, You actually did say I would be banned if I started a build thread that was not an MEV kit even if it was based on a miata....So I didn't start a build thread. Thanks. Hi Del, that is interesting news, thanks for letting me know. However your point is?

Del, You are absolutely correct and, no, I had not forgotten. However to be sure I reread the original thread in full along with all 11 posts you had previously made. Now you were wanting to build your own chassis and, although not stated, we can presume that you would also build suspension components, if not from a donor, and bodywork such as bonnet, engine cover, wings etc. I stated that featuring that (mainly having a build diary) in this forum was not allowed under the rules because it clearly would not be a MEV designed vehicle and the key components would not be sourced from a MEV approved supplier. I also said you were welcome to undertake such a project but if it was a direct copy of a MEV you may fall foul of copyright laws, whether they would be enforced is up to the copyright owner, however again you could not have a build diary under these circumstances. In fact were you to be in clear breach of copyright you would almost definately be banned. (Final decision on that would be from the moderator group). However whether to build your own design was your decision and I have never been against anyone with the right skills and technical expertise doing this. The only points to remember is that they have to build it correctly and they have to get it approved for road use. Remember should there be a failure leading to an incident it could involve other people's lives, not just your own. So, back to your claim of inconsistently. I see no justification in your claim. You wanted to build and, I presume, diary a NON MEV build (if you weren't going to diary why ask) whereas jgilbert is looking for unwanted parts as stated quite clearly at the beginning of this thread. It is quite a sensible thing to do as, logically, there are always builders with unwanted parts in here. The updates on his project can hardly be described as a build diary and, I am sure, are only there to "bump" the thread so it would be noticed again. Now you are clearly a man who can search out rules and regulations within a forum and highlight the application , or otherwise, of them. However with all rule sets there has to be a step beyond this which is interpretation of the meaning of such rules and how they apply to different, but not explicitly stated, situations. This is clearly one such situation. Regards

Del,
I repeat - the OP is NOT posting a diary documenting his build, he is simply offering to help out builders with surplus parts to dispose of.
I am sure we would all be keen to see your finished build and a few pictures in any other vehicles would be of interest to members.
However I am also sure members would be interested in seeing the castings we made for our customer building a Maclaren (sorry forgot the model) replica for track use. It doesn't mean he could host a diary here though does it?
