I am always lurking about in the background. Started my build, as documented elsewhere on the forum, but new house and first child have put paid to any hopes that she will be on the road this year. Going down the line of a TD04 turboed mx5 1.8 engine . Which has got me thinking about power to weight etc. Has anybody got a final weight for a road legal Mevster?
Brilliant, thanks for the reply. I am hoping to put her on a diet and try and squeeze under the 700 mark which I had in my head. My intention was always to run with a fly screen as opposed to a windscreen so hope that will shave a little.
On a side note how do you find the space in the drivers side. At 6 foot 4 I have found it quite restrictive. I have opted to remove the alloy panel behind the pedals and modify the pedals to bring them closer to the engine bay. Yet to fashion a replacement panel around the new layout.
For IVA they normally allow for 2 people at 85 kgs plus full tank. Mine weighs 680. Wheels can make a massive difference, some cheap alloys are very heavy, steel wheels can look OK try a set of a BMW Mini, (4x100) very light but may not fit in with your theme
Our MEV had the standard tank fitted off doner so fitting the small ally tank may may lighten it a bit . Losing the screen also may reduce the weight as the glass is the only heavy part of the screen so you would not need wipers / wiper motor heater yet another weight save
I forgot as for the seat position our seats only catch the seat belt top anchorage point when they are fully at the rear position but we are under 6ft so that has been left on ours as it does not bother us
Looks like I will easily sail under the 700kg bar. Not that there was any science used to reach that goal, just seemed a nice figure....
I am in the process of rewiring the car from scratch. There should be no excess wiring at all, might save a few pounds. I think the whole weight thing could get quite addictive.
P5curly, could I be cheeky and ask if you would mind posting a few photos of your dash ?. I am playing with some ideas in my moind re the interior finish. In the most part doing away with the mx5 speedo and fitting an acewell unit in front of the gear stick, ie where the radio would be fitted in a traditional car.
Thanks again for everybody's assistance. I hope you all have a great Christmas
Hec I will post some pics tomorrow are you losing the screen
Brilliant thanks. Thats the plan. The car is going to be nothing more than a good weather play thing for me and something to tinker with in the garage. I like the more raw go kart style look and think a fly screen will finish it off whilst affording a little protection from low flying objects. This is all in my head anyway it may well not turn out as imagined :-)
