Well the big day has arrived for the body to come off of the MX5 on Saturday. I have hired a lifting crane but realised I have nothing to attach the two together, apart from a large towing rope....would this be adequate as most have a tow limit of around 2 tonnes.
Thanks Dave

2 tonne strap? Yeah, more than adequate

I've got a rope rather than a strap but has pulled a couple of cars in its time with no problems.

Don't forget to add blocks to prevent the suspension collapsing once the chassis is lifted off. then you can just push the running gear out of the way and lower the chassis again. wrap the rope around a couple of times is it's long enough. Good luck

obviously care is needed. Don't let anyone get under it, you may find a hose or wire that stops it coming off and so you must make sure it's safe to work under, it is always tempting to just nip under for a quick cut off. Rope can be OK but it can cut if not protected on sharp edges of the steel body. Get your trailer ready to drop it straight on to so you lift once only if possible. It always makes sense to reduce the weight as much as possible by removing everything you can, the doors are very heavy. Drain the fuel by overriding the pump relay and pump it out. They always have a couple of gallons even when on empty. Have fun now.

There should be a drain on the fuel tank on the left side bottom front.

Doors off, fuel out, subframe bolts loosened, so glad I invested in an impact driver took under an hour to loosen them all. Could not budge the hub nuts with breaker bar and scaffold pole so will have another go before lift off on Saturday morning, or just leave them in place and work around them

There should be a drain on the fuel tank on the left side bottom front. But I am so happy when I find this free fuel that I must put it in a tank, I suppose you could filter it from the drain plug

Stuart.. At the price of fuel these days I would.. a pair of ladies stockings inside a coffee filter should do it..
Dave.. On the axle nuts did you unstake the nut. they should be torqued to 174-235 lbs. Soak with Blaster or such get a longer pipe. Are you using an air, electric, impact wrench or BFH on an impact driver.. Get them loose now or you will play hell later..

Yep unstaked, tried an electric impact wrench first then a breaker bar with scaffold pole. Will have another good go in the morning.

Quick update, Managed to undo all hub bolts with the electric impact driver, although I seem to have damaged the last bit of thread on one of the front hubs as the nut wouldn't go back on . Shortly followed by the shell coming off , fuel tank, handbrake cables and fuel lines removed. Now sitting at home with a cup of tea and a big smile on my face.

Well done. Body off is a landmark moment in the build process.
