Hi, let me shortly introduce myself. I'm from Belgium and been thinking about a tr1ke for some time now. I will order and make one once I've built my garage So at the moment I can only envy you guys who have built a tr1ke already... Tig welding of stainless steel is a hobby of mine, so making brackets etc will be no problemo. The reason I post here is because I want to be prepared for my build, since I only plan on making one, I want it done correctly. ==> Therefore I reach out to you pro's for some info, maybe the info can be helpful for all future builders... I plan on using a Hayabusa as donor, already contacted the guys at RTR and they replied that they will shortly be producing the Triabusa, nice ! Reason for me wanting a Busa: - older bikes already have 175hp and I think the 1300cc vs 1000cc engine will be more robust... - the clutch and gearbox will be more robust aswell since the busa is a heavier bike more comparable to the tr1ke. - more torque will make for easier start from standstill and the busa is more touring oriented, so may be less twitchy. Questions:1) Regarding the engine: Bike engines are not foreseen for the cornering force in a car (oil will move to the sidewall when cornering). Do you need to foresee a baffle in the bellypan to overcome this or any other additional mods? Are there certain engines that handle this better than others? R1 (<2005) vs R1 (>2005) vs Hayabusa (<2008) ? 2) Clutch: Do you need different clutch springs or other mods to the clutch for the extra weight? 3) Cooling: I've seen some of you have modified the original cooling circuit. Why is this and what exactly can you recommend? Do you need to do more than make the hoses longer in order to fit the radiator further away from the engine? Can you still use the original radiator + fan? 4) Brakes: How do you balance the front to rear braking ratio? There is one circuit for the front and another one for the rear, and the brakepedal operates both at once right? 5) Shifting (gear changing): Is it preferred to go the electronic route with a clicktronic or is it better to have it mechanicly? Can you also go the mechanical route and still mount paddles using a push\pull rod in a hose? 6) Has anyone already succesfully registered a tr1ke in Belgium? I know it needs to go via the UK (supported by rtr) and than needs to be imported to Belgium. But if it has not been registered in the UK, than I will be importing a "new" vehicle and need to pay taxes for this in Belgium. Also in Belgium, bikes have only 100hp on paper, so the registration remains cheap. If I use a Belgian bike as donor, will the UK put on the tr1ke papers that it has only 100hp, according to the papers I have of the Belgian bike? I will appreciate your answers to any of my questions!

Hello mate Glad you spoke to rtr, I was with them at the weekend and I'm the guinea pig that's building the first triabusa. Just bought my bike today so hopefully will be starting a build thread in the next week it two once the forum has been updated with a triabusa sub section hopefully most of your questions will be answered in my build diary. Sorry I can't answer them now. Cheers Adam

Hello jellle not building a triabusa but interested in seeing progress on one. so thought id add my own views on a few of your busa related questions...
assuming your keeping as standard for road use and occasional track day, as a bare minimum I reckon........
engine - add sump baffle plate clutch - can be left as standard just check plates for wear. would benefit from upgrade in springs to heavy duty, full race etc.....
cooling - not 100% sure about using standard busa rad, fan - would certainly benefit from larger rad/fan and extend hoses.
Also consider sprag clutch upgrade if using early engine and intending trackdays. pc3/pcv. maybe small ewp to supplement existing
Again, all as minimum for standard engine.

Hi Matt, appreciate the recommendations. Will indeed do mostly road driving...
The sump baffle was my biggest concern, thought maybe it needed a dry sump conversion and I'm not up to engine mods like that...
Regarding cooling on the tr1ke, I take it you also dont use the standard R1 radiator + fan than?
Cheers

I really cant see it needing dry sump for road and odd track day use. If the engine is standard and kept transverse, addition of good quality baffle plate will be sufficient imo. As long as the oil is correctly filled for car use (slightly over I think), engine is upto correct temperature before driving, etc, etc..... I know of a few who have been running (and racing) wet sump baffle plate hayabusa powered vehicles, keeping the engine standard and transverse, for a number of years with no issues.
Im building a mevabusa but would imagine same cooling layout as triabusa. No, I'm not using standard bike rad and fan but a slightly larger vw rad and 10" aftermarket fan. I know theres a mevabusa with the standard rad and fan and as far as I know that works ok. Cant comment about the tr1kes but I'm sure some of the build threads will have relevant details.

Im just going to baffle sump my Engine. Spoke to RTR about it and they say the engine is at the same angle as it is in the bike. Only main difference is the engine does tilt like when in the bike going round corners, hence why i'm doing the baffle sump to be on the safe side.
RTR say you can use the standard radiator and fan but i may up grade as its a easier to do at build stage than at a later date. The money i sell the standard fan for should cover some of the cost.
As for gear change, the choice is yours. Im going electronic (Buttons on the steering wheel) or I might go paddle. The mechanical route would be cheaper though.
The engine shouldnt need any further mods but if you are unsure its worth doing while the engine is out. alot easier.
Cheers adam

Adam, Matt, thanks for the recommendations. I seems I was worrying about the sump for nothing. A baffle should be an easy fit I guess. Regarding the cooling, I think I will use the standard Busa radiator and maybe a bigger fan only. Just looked up that also I will have to add an extra reservoir for filling as the original filler reservoir will not be at the highest point anymore. Also, I saw that vtR1k is has built in a swirl pot to the fueling system, he's running a newer R1 with 180bhp... Are you guys also planning on doing this? Here's a link to swirl pot explanation: flashcustoms.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/why-use-a-fuel-swirl-pot/For shifting, I will prefer a mechanical system, so I'll probably try to make a mechanical paddle shifter... I believe the guys in below movie also dis thiq although I'm not sure: Cheers, Jelle

RTR uses swirl pot. I'm not at the moment, gone a different route - trial and error though. going to try it over next few weeks...............

Hello all, after a while I'm back. My house is nearly finished so onto the next project, the Triabusa! Meanwhile I've bought myself a Hayabusa donor bike, driven it once on Zolder (racing track in Belgium) and now I'm ready to start taking it apart because I placed my deposit for a Triabusa at Bas in the Netherlands yesterday... I have a lot to learn, but look forward to building it... Hopefully you guys can help me out here and there. The process I have in mind is the following: 1) Buy Busa , check! 2) Place deposit for trike kit, check! 3) Wait impatiently for the kit to arrive at Bas from kitcarcollection in the Netherlands 4) Go and get the kit with the trailer together with a friend 5) Let the building begin! 6) Finish build and disassemble all things so it can be powdercoated 7) Rebuild the whole thing and put it on the trailer to Roadtrackrace 8) Hope it passes MSVA 9) Get it back 10) Try to get the paperwork fixed for importing it into Belgium. 11) Njoy and drink many beers I'll try to keep the thread updated along the way.

I'm glad there is another person from belgium starting a build, i also started my build, the only thing i worried about is getting it on the road in belgium, what if the build is finished after the brexit ? Would you still imported true the UK or would you go true the netherlands ? I believe getting the papers would be the most difficult thing of the build here in belgium. i will follow your build, and wish you the best luck.

Hey Kevin, I too am afraid of getting the kit road legal in Belgium. My aim (plan A) is to finish before the Brexit... But don't know if this is realistic.
Plan B is indeed to go via the Netherlands, (I think that requires the frame to be checked in unsprayed condition before the start of the build though).
Plan C, well a trike doesn't have to go to the yearly checkup in Belgium since it's categorized as a motorbike, so there are options I think...
Best of luck to you as well. I checked your thread earlier today.

There are always options in belgium, but to be perfectly legal is something else, mij plan A is also finish it before brexit, as the control in the netherlands is too expensive for me, Plan B is getting it iva'd and then sell it to someone in the UK with los but still had the fun buildin it. I allready talked to a lot of guys for taking the options route but i have a house and two kids, if there would be an accident and afterwords it comes out that there is one paper that isn't 100% correct, i think i would lose it all so theres only plan A for me. As the latest news is that they will start with brexit in 2017 but that doesn't mean they will leave in 2017 so lets hope for us that that the UK is simular to belgium and that the paper mill takes ages

It will take 2 years to exit once started so that should be a good incentive for you to crack on 😜

Mawdo, Mental note taken :-) I just ordered myself some rims: www.wheeloutlet.nl/niu-m-velgen-zwart-17-inch-7j-et40-4x108-60475376.htmlThink I'll be going for 205/40 ZR17 tyres all round. I haven't decided on the brand yet. Suggestions are appreciated... Some first questions: 1) Bushings in the wishbones ==> Can I mount them in the unpainted wishbones and than unmount them before powdercoating and remount after powdercoating? Or will I break them when removing them? 2) Push/pull cable for gear changes. Any suggestions? 3) MSVA requirements. Where can I find them for a trike? Regards, Jelle
