Hi Sonic 7 veterans,
Me and my son are about to embark on our first kit car project and would love to meet up with anyone who has been through a build and lives in the midlands area (ideally Warwickshire / Coventry).
we have be toying between Rocket and Sonic7 and I think we're pretty much settled on the Sonic 7 given the additional weather protection. we've put our deposit down and are now in the second research mode whilst we agree on a build slot.
Looking forward to joining the Sonic 7 club
Thanks

Hi dhinsay
Welcome to the MEV family And as you say the Sonic7 club. I have a Sonic7 that I have built about two years now. I'm not in the Midlands. I'm up in Glasgow I will have it at Donnington in August if you are going. Looking forward to seeing another Sonic7 on the Forum.
Cheers Andy

Excellent - you must be as excited about this as me and my son Our current mission is to try and find a focus donor car for the right price and with a problem free engine, gearbox and clutch. We drove up to Birmingham then down to Rugby, but both cars we looked at had duff clutches and suspicously low mileage We are trying also still trying to find a secure place where we can start our build as the garage is occupied by my wife and he beauty business When is the donnington show ?

I wouldn't worry to much about the clutch it's only £100 or so for a new one and it will be easy to fit when you have the engine out. I would change the clutch and cam belt on an older car anyway before using it. You really don't want to do that job once the engine is fitted.

Thanks, thats good advice!
What about tools and parts - what are the must have tools to strip down the donor car and then ultimately with the build ?
Where is the best place to buy, ebay or specialist sites ?

Keep a look out for halfords sale, their range of professional tools are very good but wait til they have the 50% off sale.
You will need a good socket set, spanner set, screwdriver set and lots of WD40 for those hard to remove bolts.
Also a rubber mallet, a big hammer and a bigger one, a grinder with a cutting disc a chisel to go with the hammer/mallet.
Always keep a look out in the ££ shops that are great for torches, head torches and load of other come in handy sets lit watch maker screwdrivers.

I have the 90 piece set, it's good but had to buy a 7mm Allen key bit for the front calipers a 55 torx bit and another torx socket for the strip down. Given the limited range of spinners I think it would have been a better choice to get the next size up in their sets.
Get the right donor and you can make a profit, I'm £85 up and still have the engine, gearbox, brakes, most of the interior, a complete door, the bonnet a door shell and an offer of £40 for the shell from the local scrapie.

That sounds brilliant. I hope I am able to do the same. Most of the donors I am seeing are coming in at around 145K miles, is this way too high ?

My build thread is under Faslane Rocket. I've tried to put as much info in it as possible particularly when I stripped the donor car.
Remember that you don't necessarily need a donor car. You can buy what you need from a scrappy. An IB5 gearbox will cost you about £40 and a new 2.0 zetec will cost you £850.

Where about in warwickshire are you? I know there are a few builds of the exocet in the area, and mine is finished and on the road. Not sure about the sonics though. Have a look on the builders map to see any local builds.
