Hi folks, newbie here ? Right where to start.Been reading loads of posts about builds but I am having a bit of a dilemma trying to decide what to go for.At first I was all set on the Exocet as it will be my first ever build, not done much tinkering on cars before apart from filter changes and plugs. But the more I look and read I fancy the rocket which tbh looks the part and a ford focus donor car seems to come in a lot cheaper than an mx5. Iv got my eye on an mx5 which is an mot fail but not sure how much I would need to replace etc to get it up to scratch. So is it worth paying the extra cash for the rocket since you get suspension, bushes etc with that? Sorry for the rambling but just want to know folks opinions on the matter.I'm sure there are already post out there covering this too. Del

the rocket wont come cheap. done believe the 8k build bull$hit, it wont happen.. Trust me, and everyone else who agrees after reading this. However it does look the part. but every builder would give you how they would change things with hindsight. good and bad. I would have build mine more simple to start with.. and spent less.. lol

might be worth a trip to Stoneleigh 4th/5th may. speak to the owners and have a good look round both the rockets and exocets. plus rtr and mev will be there no doubt.
personal preference, but i'd go for the rocket if funds permit...

Thanks guys,I'm up in Glasgow deano, not sure how many folk are nearby with builds. Not really got the chance to go down to stoneleigh so if anyone was close by it would be great to get a look close up.I'm not in any rush to get build done so would give myself to this time next year to get it on the road all going well.

Funds could be a problem if I go for rocket and I would expect it to take me a bit longer to get it done as well. But also don't want to make a hash of first build which swings me in favour of the lower cost exocet!

This is a list of what the mx5 I have my eye on failed its mot on: N/S rear suspension mounting excessively corroded O/S rear suspension mounting excessively corroded > these 2 items could be that I had a compressor / battery in the boot for a long time (it's kind of white corrosion on the mounts) O/S front vehicle structure excessive corrosion N/S rear suspension arm seriously weakened The wings and sills are also rusty to point where a hand jack might puncture through. m.ebay.co.uk/itm/221399415378?nav=SEARCHAny thoughts about it and if its to much work to carry out?

I'm of the impression that a Rocket can be built cheaper than some are doing it for, whilst there is of course a minimum, it is the bling that adds cost. I too wondered about building an Exocet first to make my first build cheaper and have a "practice" on something less complex. Before my build I had done even less with cars than yourself. However the Rocket had that "look" and I would forever have been yearning to build one (no disrespect to the Exocet) so in the end it would have been REALLY expensive. If you take your time, ask the right questions and set a realistic budget then go for it.

I'm in Motherwell currently building a Exocet, it's not running or near completion but you can get an appreciation of what it looks like and what is involved. You're welcome to pop around and have a look. Shaun

I'm in Glasgow, had my Rocket on the road now for 18 months. Andy live just along the road from me with his Sonic 7. We had the cars at the sScottish car show last year.
Yes, you can have one of these cars on the road for under £10k but it will be a basic model using as much of the donor as you can.
I think your minimum budget for either of these cars should be around the £12k mark.
With an Exocet coming in at £4k minimum.
But no matter what you set your budget at you will increase it several times.

Thanks kiwi, what's the rocket like to drive? I won't be on the track with it, it will just be for sunny days and country roads weather permitting! Is the rocket not very light at the front end? I used to have an mr2 and at 70 mph the front end was light as.I think the exocet with mx5 donor would spread the weight more evenly for road driving.
