EV is on my radar too Dave. In fact I drive one most days for my commute which is generally around 35 miles a day sometimes twice that if I'm fetching parts. They can indeed save you a fortune in fuel and service costs but the components are not cheap and batteries need to be looked after carefully. Really you should not drain batteries much beyond 50% of their capacity on a regular basis if you want them to last a good length of time.
I've done an etrike in the past and whilst they are fun they are not really for anything other than a local run-around. It is a plans only kit so of course you can change things to suit you and that was one of the points to the etrike in the first place. I'd be very interested if you go the EV route for sure.

Well, I will be out of the market totally for some time. I hit a De-lamanated tire on my Burgman 650 Friday at 7PM at over 80 MPH, "death wobbled" and crashed. I broke 9 ribs, left shoulder and tons of road rash.
This is my 3rd motorcycle crash in about 7 years and the worst by far. I may be doing a trike later, next year or so.

Not much a person can say about a guy that just walked away from a near death experience except maybe 80 MPH on your 650 might be like leaning into a left hook... by Muhammad Ali.... ya know it's coming and you know it's gonna hurt. So, when do we get pictures of the Burgman and of course a picture of you in front of the crashed bike giving a thumbs up?
Seriously, 80 FMPH on a Burgman 650, Dave... I am glad you are alive and well (as can be) under the circumstances. I hope you know I am only bustin yer chops. I imagine your wife also laid into you as well. If she hasn't yet, then it's coming and you know you deserve every thing she says to you. The only appropriate answer is "Yes Mam"
Slow down bud, live to ride another day. Sorry it is so painful, but 80 MPH Dave.. you weren't just speeding you were doing a high speed low level pass to heavens door, lucky for you they don't take scooter riders on the even days of the month.
Roger..
PS: get well soon. I'm done now. We all do stuff we wish we hadnt. I suppose you feel a bit like that. Sorry you lost your Burgman and road rashed your body Along with busting your ribs.

Roger, I was doing a steady 70 MPH when I seen the loose tire chunk that hit my front wheel. I seen it coming and had hit the gas to try missing it but nope. It hit and I got into a "Tank Slapper". I let off the gas and squeezed the rear brake a bit but this did not help and two seconds later I was slammed down and into the concrete Jerzy Barrier. Everything past that was a blur for hours. From another forum, DaveJ wrote: "I returned home after 1 week in hospital taking 15mg OxyCondon every 3 hours to being home low dosed down to 5mg every 6 hours so I said screw it and have taken 1 in 24 hours. I am on a 1-10 scale of pain at about a 2-3 range without the OXYC. The pelvic displacement keeps me walking with a walker so limited places to go but I am walking. I broke ribs 0-8 with 6 of the 9 muli fractures. The left lung is re-inflated and am getting my breath back. I am on a oxygen machine/tank. The two knees are starting to scab over, right elbow is scabbed, left wrist too. My left hand is still swollen from the small fingers knuckle to middle finger knuckles.
The bike looks amazing. Yes the left tupperware is ground down some, left headlight is shattered as is the GIVI's left lower shield. My son says it rides but has a front shake so the front tire or wheel is damaged.
I was doing between 65 - 70 with traffic flow at 7 PM on a Friday night (4-17-15). I had passed a left "Lane Parker" (Slow lane driver in the fast lane) doing 55 MPH and twice he speed up to over 70 to keep me and many more from going around so I buzzed past him at 80 MPH and 4 miles later I had this de-lamanated tire thrown at me and hit my front wheel. I got in to a "Tank Slapper" and could do nothing to stop it, 2 seconds and I hit the ground. Another motorcyclist was the first to stop."To see my riding gear go to: ATGATT Gear So with 9 days to think on it, I am thinking about a Reverse Trike much harder now.

Dave:
Seriously, I am glad you are alive to tell the tale. The road rash will heal as will the rest of your body, or as they say in the South... "Hided up and haired over". You can always replace the trike, or fix it, but you only got one of you. Stuff like this is more than just a learning lesson. This is a life changing attitude adjustment on how to ride and "what" to ride. At least you know now how fast a leisurely drive can turn ugly. You will have this accident to remind you every time you are on two wheels. Years ago an old biker guy with a beat up Harley gave me his spin on riding,.... His comments went something like this: "A superior rider uses his superior skills to avoid situations requiring the use of his superior skills".
I just turned 66 last month, I have ridden everything from mini bikes (or doodle bugs) to my Victory. I put 10,000-15,000 miles every year on a bike. As much as I prepare and plan, I can't sidestep just plain dumb bad luck. Coming around a corner in Maine to be faced with a half ton of moose standing in the road, or sweeping down the Mountain passes between Grants Pass Oregon and Crescent City California and hitting a rock in the road... all dumb luck if you hit them. I missed the moose and missed the small boulder, but I was lucky. Just when you think you have it all together, Dumb luck enters the scene. I figure to be riding another 9 or 10 years before I decide when to stop. Right now, I am all about going places and doing stuff on my trikes and the 400 Burgman. As much as I love the sport, I participate (heavily) in spite of the risks and hazards.
I agree with your thoughts about getting a trike. I not only have the Eco-Exo-R, I recently converted my Victory Cross Country Tour into a trike. They are quite stable on the road and hazards like you encountered would be a mild bump and not much more. There are kits available to convert the Burgman and Silverwing scooters. The 400 Eco-Exo-R would be a great start, or you could buy a ready built Harey, Honda, or other touring trike.
Again, I am glad you are on the mend.

Well its been just over a month and am still healing with a ways to go yet. I wish Kelvin had that 650 kit on the market. I have 2 Burgman 650s now for power. I am looking for a kit or plans to build a reverse trike. A basic EXO type, fancy will be added later.

The 650 is a huge unit and unless you managed to shorten your legs in that accident Dave it's not going to fit in the chassis unfortunately. I would like to do a 650 and have got an idea for something in the future but it will be a fair time coming. I'd like to say I'd look into making a 650 squeeze into this new machine I'm working on at the moment but I'd need to be sure it would sell to warrant the work on it really.

I have one of the Texas Eco-Exo R's. Mostly built. very custom bodywork. Was built with nice Bergman components. I built it all the way to the point of almost street legal. I did drive it a lot as I considered it a highly modified Bergman. Lol Glad I was never challenged. Work, daughter and so many other projects pushed it to the side. Last started about a year ago. I have practically 100% of whats needed to finish even the paint. Hugger orange and flatz carbon grey. It's either time to part with it or finally finish it. As I recall I hadn't quite interfaced the wiring harness to the column controls, the mirrors shook a bit too much and I needed to rework the gas peddle as it was to hard to press, probably just too much spring pressure to be comfortable. The rear bodywork (tank cover) wasn't completed (have the eco exo supplied body work) and hadn't yet mounted the windshield. It could be finished to like new in 2-3 weeks, needs new tires, theyre not bad, just not perfect. New battery required. With fuel and a jumpstart i'm betting it fires right up. Remembering as I go, also have mazda emergency brake handle I never installed. Several other items i'm sure in boxes, two driving lights, I built a very nice wiring harness with plugs, If anyones interested I might be willing to sell. I wont be a give away but it could be a very good deal. jimmybcox@gmail.com or 281-786-9444. I can shoot some photos if anyone's interested I might still be on these blogs from way back Texas Eco Exo or jimmy cox.

I'm in France, but I'm interested in 3 wheelers and eco-exo. I think the original engine is interesting, but a bit weak. A 50hp engine will be more appropriate for me. It will be more fun but also safer on the road. To be interesting it must be a simple machine. The exo-eco is that. It remains to find the right engine.

It will be more fun but also safer on the road. To be interesting it must be a simple machine. The exo-eco is that. It remains to find the right engine. I don't know if you have ridden a Burgman 400. They are fair in all riding conditions. It will climb any mountain pass at the speed limit unless you're talking about the German Autobahn. Top speed is just around 160 Km/h. In this trike, maybe top speed of 150 Km/h. Faster than you really need to go most times.
But when I was trying to buy the manufacturing of this kit from Qdos, I researched many different engines. The easy modification would be a 2007 up Burgman 400 like Roger did on his. Next would be a Honda 600cc Silverwing engine.
The BMW C650 will not work as it is just about as long as a Burgman 650.
Next idea was to use a small motorcycle engine that would require making a shifter lever and a clutch peddle and cable. A Honda CB500 engine would be more than enough power for 90% of the people looking for a small commuter or cruising trike.
The point I'm making is, with a few modifactions of welding on engine and swingarm mounts any engine could be adaptd to this kit. We just need someone to take over from Qdos.

Hello, It is not so simple. I am in France (in Europe it's the same except in England) and the conditions to roll a vehicle on the road are difficult, standards applied are very severe, especially for engines (pollution and noise). For now, It takes a motor after 2017
I know that a burgann 400 is a good engine, enough for a scott. for a fun machine, it is not powerful enough (25hp). He does not have enough torque to provide accelerations. European models do not go up to 150 km / h-mi / h (max 120-130 -)
The demand of "pilots" is important too. They want a fun gear, fun. I had lotus seven, my reverse trike is 100cv for 400kgs. If the exo eco is 200kg, it would take about 40-50 hp The idea of taking a CB 500 can be good, but between the engine and the back of the bike, it will be a very long vehicle. It is important that the machine makes you want by its performances, it is what will make that it will be desired and bought.
Resume the manufacture of Qdos, why not, but 1) It seemed to me that it is Kelvin who has the name and the model? 2) I'm in France, it's a bit far from US ;-) 3) I do not know if there is sufficient demand in France and in Europe to make a manufacture. That I do not earn money, OK, but I do not want to lose or put all my free time (I have a job)
