I just ordered my "r" kit and I have found a good donor bike but it has a salvage title . I am in Pennsylvania...does anyone know if it is better for me to find one with a valid title ? In other words will it cause issues when registering my trike if I used a donor bike with a salvaged title? Thanks
Welcome to the forum. You are the owner of the 4th Eco-Exo R in the US. I will tell you what I had to do when I built my trike. I currently have the only street legal registered Eco-Exo in the US and it had a salvage title donor. I live in Worcester Massachusetts. Come on by and check mine out if you like.
To answer your question..... First of all MAKE SURE you have a 2003 thru 2006 donor....if it is a salvage title vehicle you MUST have two accompanying documents. Document 1 is the reassignment of ownership on an original form. The second document is the insurance companies written appraisal of the donor at the time of loss. If you get these documents it establishes a clear paper trail from the insurance company, to the salvage company to a dealer and finally to you. If someone's name is on the title, they usually have to be a licensed dealer, or own a business and willing to put their license number on the reassignment of ownership. You do not have to register it in your name. In short... It is less hassle to find a donor with a valid title.
One point here if you buy a scooter with a good title...... Make sure you buy a compete scooter and take plenty of pictures, a couple of the VIN is a good idea. Title the scooter in your name. Thus ends the paper trail for it. When you buy parts, EBAY receipts are not allowed. You can buy from licensed dealers, or a company that has a letterhead receipt and is able to provide the donor part VIN on the receipt. Keep all receipts.. Everything from nuts and bolts to the big stuff. You also must make copies of everything as well.

Roger ...good to hear your comments. It appears I found a good , valid titled, 2006 burgman 400 at a reputable dealer which I bought today. I have opted to pay more to get one with some "backup" rather than scratching around for something real cheap and maybe harder to deal with. It is a perfect running , 7000 mile example that was litterally owned by an older lady ....ahem ..who also dumped it a lot so all the body work on the sides was pretty bad but I don't really care about that so it brought the price down a bit. I will get it titled, and probably ride the thing until I'm ready to start ripping it apart. I'm pretty sure I can build this trike though I really don't need or want another project...but I am doing this in lieu of buying a Morgan, which at about 55 grand was very, very hard to justify to even myself.
So off I go. I have reasonable skills and I did build a MG-TD / VW based kit car around 30 years ago ... hmmm ..maybe 35 years ago ..anyway ... that turned out pretty nice but I'm hoping this won't require as much effort. I have a great workspace and I think all the tools / etc. I need to make a nice one ...we shall see. ..

Fred: I personally own a 2004 Burgman 400. It is my get around town scooter. Room enough for a large pizza, a 12 pack of soda and a load of lumber. As Dave said, it is fun to drive. Keep posting on the forum with your progress and problems. Lots of people read the build journals and you can get almost instant answers to problems, or "How To" assistance. Congrats on your new purshase!
You will be better off with an uncoated frame. You need to add brackets for the GRP parts and loom hardware, seat and it's likely you need to reposition the shock bracket and remakethetank bracketry. I do recommend those to have them not welded in the kit but position them self.
The additional item list is quite short for my version. Seat, seat rails, wiring, reflectors, lights, steering wheel+hub, mirrors and additional front wheel+caliper etc.
There is a section in this forum where you can download the manuals. Feel free to browse through our building threads to see our builds and clone the detals you dig
Fred. The upgrades on my trike are nearly complete.... I need to have a couple of pieces powder coated and it will be done. I upgraded the gauge cluster and windshield. I figure by the end of next week I will be ready to do another video. The weather has been quite nice and I am looking forward to the riding season. I will be more than glad to provide anything I can, bear in mind I am leaving in June for a ride out west .. Be back in July. The initial assembly is easy, just don't go to fast....... It sort of falls together once you get things going in that direction. The big thing is to save your receipts....... Happy building.....

So here it is ...my donor scooter. Very low miles, owned by an elderly lady ...that's what the salesman actually told me ... lotsa scratches from being dropped but otherwise perfect! I must say , an impressive thing ... I'll ride it for a month or so then start ripping it apart. I must say seems a shame to destroy such a nice thing but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Don't worry. When you tear it apart you will never buy a scooter again. One pile of brackets attached to a frame holding the covers in place. I was really suprised scooters are constructed this poor. The engine looks like a wonderfull powerplant.
Be carefull with the windscreen. They are very hard to source. I'm looking for a new one for 6 months now. Once you have sourced the front wheel assy, steering wheel, seat and lights you will have a good start for sure!
Looks like the blue ones are destined to die, Edward. Or maybe die is too harsh ... cause they don't die. They are reborn. Reborn as a celebrity. Bound to be noticed wherever they go. Less like dying more like winning the lotto. Whooo Hooo. Probably the best a lowly scooter can hope for. We're doing these one-of-million scooters a favor. We make them into an Eco-Exo. Hope they appreciate it..
Have you got your kit yet? I know you said it was a little delayed, but weren't you supposed to have it by now even with the delay. I checked your donor. It looks nice, blue was a popular color for Burgmans. I happen to own a blue one myself, there were popular with the "Little Old Gray Haired Lady" crowd. I use mine as a get about rider. My road bike is just way to big for around town use and the Burgman is just right. By the way, the Eco-Exo is also a GREAT around town errand runner as well.
Please note: you might want to plan on putting an air intake scoop for the radiator. On a mild day, mine will overheat if I drive it past 55 MPH. I have a temporary air scoop in place and that resolved the issue. It does not get above medium range even in 90 degree weather with it on. After I return from my vacation, I will make a permanent fiberglass scoop and perhaps do a carbon fiber overlay.
