Mark, also you can purchase the correct size brake discs from rally design. Ford Cortina discs are too small in diameter and too thick.

Hi all. Long time no post so here's an update... Ford Zetec 1.8L motor installed, fuel and cooling done. Brakes, clutch done. Bonnet mounted - hinging at the rear. Instruments installed but not yet connected. I went a Lithium Ion battery that weighs 1.9 kg. Because we have extra strengthening between seats and engine we lose space so options for battery were front passenger foot well or in engine space where shown. Saved on battery leads and install. Current challenge is the gear shift. We're making a reversing mechanism to sit behind the stick. More photos to follow. Cheers M

It looks great in that colour scheme. I assume you have checked local regulations regarding seat belt mounting. In UK your top mounts would be way too low. Comparing yours to a standard chassis we see extra tubes in some areas and missing tubes in others. There 3 50mm tubes at the rear bulkhead for some reason but no back or front stays for the roll bar (style hoop). These are considered crucial to offer a degree of occupant protection and also help stiffen the engine bay. Hopefully you have a bolt on plan.

Hi Stiggy.
Thx for response. In Oz we have a much stronger torsional requirement which is why we have the extra bars and plates. Your right about bracing the roll bar and have a bolt on plan for that. I also need to stiffen the rear uprights as apparently UK experience is that they bend with harder driving.

Current challenge is the gear shift. We're making a reversing mechanism to sit behind the stick. More photos to follow. Cheers M Can you still sit in the car with that little console that you have on the right hand side? the one with the start button on it etc. I built a tiny one for my DASH2 buttons and could not get my right leg in the car as it was in the way. Regarding the gear stick mechanism I had the cable come out of the front of the gear stick (towards front of the car) then just looped the cables back 180 degrees. Works fine.

Hi.
It's really tight to sit in. I've had to remove the steering lock so as to lift the steering wheel and move it forward.
I though about your gear plan but didn't think it would work. Did you have to extend the cables?

Well I have used a Honda engine and gearbox so it's not same as the focus. That said I would imagine the gear linkage is similar and yes I had to have cables custom made. Mine are 4 metres long cost £280 I think.

The gear lever from a 2.0 focus, st170 focus or a mondeo withan mtx75 box would reverse the direction for you.

Is that lock in addition to a aerocatch? Can't quite tell from the angle.

Hi Kiwi
I don't know what an aerocatch is but our rules require two separate methods to lock a bonnet that hinges at the rear. The first is a flush mounted bonnet lock, the second a simple sprung hinge that secures on a cross beam. The bonnet opens 40mm or so on releasing the first lock and then you put your hand underneath to release the second.

The flush mounted catch is also known as an aerocatch.

I had to fit a secondary "lock", I used a short strop and clip BUT looking at your method and comparing I realise that mine still relies on remembering to clip it rather than being aotomatic like yours appears to be. Mine only really has a true purpose if the catch fails. There has been one case of what happens when you forget to lock your bonnet experienced by BobN, your system would have prevented that incident, luckily only the bonnet was damaged.

Finalised the gear cable reversing mechanism today. What a nightmare. Wish I'd looked at easier solutions.
