25/07/2014 - Cash injection Good week and a sad week at the same time... First off, I've sold my Formula Ford. Haven't had the time or budget to run it for the last couple of years, but I didn't want to let it go as once it's gone getting back into Racing again is gonna be harder (anyone with a young family knows what it's like... hard to justify what is basically an expnsive hobby). On the plus side though it frees up much needed funds for the Kit Car - shocks, bushes etc - that I couldn't afford to get until now. I'm doing the final dirty bits this weekend/next weeks evenings (engine clean and service, sorting the hubs too; much delayed! please weather, stick with me....) and then after that it's all building up. A neighbour has recently moved nd gave me one their garage racking for free (same as the ones I've already got; the heavy duty costco one) so I can clear some space around the chassis to build (if I ever move house, garage space will be more of a priority!). Also making a mk2 version of my seat mounting bars (that will span the two chassis tubes). Was trying to keep it light and used 4mm bar but it's got way too much give in it for my liking, so stepped up to 6mm thick x 35mm wide... heavier but worth it.

30/07/2014 - Getting there....Finished the MK2 seat rails and then sent them and all of the wishbones etc to the powercoaters today.... I'm away next week, so hopefully by the time I get back I'll have a pile of nice shiny bits waiting for me I've also had a crack at saving some of the worst bolts .... really not convinced the hammerite rust remover is up to it (this is the second dip now, having been worked over with wire brush several times) but it's worth a try. Half of them aren't good enough to be reused as it stands. Last bit of progress was the re-org of the garage... got rid of parts that weren't selling on ebay and racked alot of stuff that was laying around, so I've freed up quite a bit of room to work in. On the downside - dishwasher needed repairing so the engine didn't get done on the weekend. Peeved now, I just want it sorted.

31/07/2014 - DVLA update & results of the rust removerFirst off - no quibbles from the DVLA on the re-reg, so the car is now officially an Eunos Roadster (well, they listed the make as "Mazda Eunos Roadste" - close enough!). On the de-rust... mixed bag. Yes, it does a pretty good job on the rust in 24 hrs... but you'll still need to clean them up a little - here's a combo shop of bolts before and after dipping, plus one that had a quick spruce: Definately loosens it up a bit, but it isn't going to work miracles. one of the bolts (and both nuts) have signs of thread damage...... given the cost of the longer bolts (even from mx5parts and the like) I'm left with a) find an 8.8 match or b) try and find a fine-thread tap & die set and redo the thread..... thoughts?

Coming to think of it.... as a 8.8 graded bolt.... is it even realistic to try and re-cut the thread? I suspect even if it is, the cost of the tooling is going to bust the cost of replacing it.
(Sourcing a direct generic copy seems a tall order - 14mm wide on the shouldered portion, with a 12mm threaded end..... since my parts are off for powdercoating I can't check easily to see what issue, if any, would come from using a 14mm for the whole run if I could find it. I assume there is a reason it tapers down?)

Hi daz how's the build getting on ? I thought I would ask you this question . What booster seat would you use when the car is finished for your kids as I need one for my son who is nearly 4 but I have no idea what sort to buy

Hi daz how's the build getting on ? I thought I would ask you this question . What booster seat would you use when the car is finished for your kids as I need one for my son who is nearly 4 but I have no idea what sort to buy none of the standard ones would work in my seats, so there are two options: 1) Halfords do an inflatable booster seat; we've got it so my mum & dad can keep it in the boot for emergencies. it's pretty good and would do the job, plus it has the benefit of being easy to stow when you aren't using it! 2) The other idea I've toyed with is using the expanding foam we use for road seats to mold them their own insert; we use it all the time in the single seaters and you get a great fit. V light too.

17/08/2014 - Moneypit
Holiday for 1 week and working in leeds for another, so no movement on the kit at all till this weekend. And rain has once again stopped me finishing the engine clean/paint. Thoroughly monked off now.
Rest of my bits are at the powdercoaters still so I can't build that up either.
Plus.... more f*cked up parts on the old donor. The clutch itself was fine (will need to renew the bearing on the flywheel but I'd bought the parts expecting that anyway). But the Crankshaft Pulley (front damper part) has a chunk out of the v groves... like someone has jammed a fat screwdriver/chisel/pry bar into it.
And the bloody things are £140~ new! And no good quality second hand ones out there on the bay of E.
If I could go back a year and tell myself one thing, it would be to spend 3 times as much on the donor. The time and money it's costing me to bring this one up to scratch (mainly time) is astonishing.

(Apologies for the whinge..... not trying to be a debbie downer. But a year into it and I'm still not really out of the ground yet, I just want to be flying along is all.)

Yes stick to it mate we had many bad days It's always darkest before the dawn right? Case in point ..... check this out
Got my parts back from the powdercoaters this morning; I'm quite impressed to be honest, they were in a really bad way so all considered they come up pretty sweet. Subframes look mint, wishbones had some pitting but hey, it's not like coating them is going to add the metal back in
