For a number of reasons I am not going for forced injection I am looking to see what I can squeeze out the NA, easier? - No, Cheaper - No but I have my reasons Is this your race regulations? Trying to avoid jumping to a class with the big boys?

Yes casesensitive justify this blatent waste of a valuable resource I have only the standard 2.0l Zetec. For a number of reasons I am not going for forced injection I am looking to see what I can squeeze out the NA, easier? - No, Cheaper - No but I have my reasons Absolutely, me too. I've been looking at (it the very theoretical realm where I win the lottery) gas-flowed ST170 heads that claim anywhere up to 280BHP if you get cams and other bits. I'd love to get in the 220 ballpark, without going forced induction. Insurance would be a compelling reason for one. If I were fast, and I'm not, it's a totally different class in any motorsports, and I'd be up against jap boxes running mega boost levels. Too loud, too whoosy. Next step is a few tricks to do with spark plugs that I have been reading about Tell! I've invested in iridium Denso plugs and €85 Magnecor HT leads, but I suspect you have something much more elaborate up your sleeve. Spill!

Gentlemen you are both correct, FI sees the engine capacity reclassified at x1.7 so making mine equal 3.4l, the highest none 4wd class starts at 3l. There is a 7.2l car in this class, although most are not quite that big I would prefer to stay in the class I am in. casesensitive re the plugs, not sure if it is elaborate but it involves a marker pen and a dremmel

Thought it was about time I hauled my diary from the depths of page two with an update or two.
Treated myself to a new battery an Odyssey PC950, it was actually ordered from the UK at the beginning of December but got sent back to the seller, Rallynuts, by the freight company due to paperwork issues over flying it out here. Took a while but eventually they managed to sort it and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. Even with freight of UKP70 it still cost me around 60% of buying locally. The 950 is a little bigger than the usual 680 that most go for but the price difference was negligible so I thought go for it.
However things went down hill electrically after installation, my keyless start stopped working, my alternator died (or so I thought) my petrol gauge never shows above 12 litre regardless of actual amount put into the tank and my coolant temperature is 137.4 deg C !
Turned out that the alternator problem was actually the master switch, the separate alternator circuit has stopped working so the alternator was not actually connected to the battery.
Looks like the battery in the keyless start fob was the root cause of that issue.
Not figured the petrol gauge or temperature readout but I will get to the bottom of it.
Saddest thing about the alternator was it meant I was running the whole car on the battery and it gave out on the morning of the last club street sprints which was a blow.

Today I took the car to have a dyno test. Turns out I have 120 ponies at the wheels, less than the 135 I was expecting, I had got 135whp in my head as a realistic figure from the 150bhp that RTR claimed (and still do claim) the Zetec 2.0 produces. However it turns out the 2.0 produces only 130 to 135bhp so 120whp seems quite reasonable, (I don't have a cat) the dyno was hub mount rather than a wheel driven so the figures should be pretty reliable. I never had anything done to the tuning though as it found that the engine is running too lean and it is better to get that sorted first, going to check the cleanliness of the fuel filters and have the injectors cleaned then look at a revisit although the cost of that my not stack up without perhaps making a change that demands a retune. Also had the cat weighed, never done that before but it is a question that often gets asked so on the way home I called in at the refuse weigh station. With the roll cage on, myself and some junk (laptop and bits n bobs) we weighed in at 720kg. Taking myself and the junk out brings it down to 625kg. I figure the roll cage weighs around 30kg (will have to check that next time it is off) this brings the car to 590kg wet. I was under the impression it would be around 550kg but I think that might have been the weight of Mabbs car and I know I was going to be heavier. Anyone care to comment on that figure please? Another thing that comes out of the dyno figures and weight measurement is that the figures I have been recording for 0-60 aqnd 1/8 mile test are actually more in line with suggested figures from online calculators. Whilst there are differences in theoretical performance calculations it still brings me closer to those figures when I put a lower power / heavier weight car in!

Hi Kiwi, I think mine is the same setup as yours (2l running Omex, I do have a k&n appollo cone filter and standard exhaust manifold and cat). I took mine to be tuned and it made 140bhp on the rollers. When you had yours done was it just a measurement or did they play around with the settings / map. I didn't ask what the base map power was from Omex, but he did say it was a good map to about 4500rpm and then died off. At the time I didn't really know what that felt like accelerating / driving. I certainly did after the tune.
I thought Zetec with Omex would make 150bhp. However if you look at the engine option on the Omex website it states it is 150bhp but also it was done with a Westfield 4-1 exhaust. Comparing that figure against mine then with the 4-1 exhaust the 150bhp seems reasonable. A lot of forums say the exhaust and inlet manifold are constraints of the engine?? Matt

I have the 2l, Omex 600, RTR SS exhuast with the large muffler sitting along the back and a pipercross cone filter.
It was decided not to adjust the map until the lean running was sorted, whilst it is not extreme it is not good to be lean. I am hoping it is only dirty filters so that will be the first job, the car is surging a little so we are reasonable confident it is related to that. I ran out of fuel a couple of weeks ago so probably sucked up some dirt.
Rethinking the comments made at the dyno, it was suggested that the difference between bhp and whp could be as much as 20%, if mine is putting out 130bhp then 120whp is only around 8% loss, even if I had 135bhp dropping to 120whp is only an 11% loss.
Considering that then the bhp is looking at being higher than 130hp, in fact 20% of 150bhp is in fact 120whp.
Of course this is where you are going to tell me you in fact have 140whp lol

Lol, no it's 140bhp. Yours sounds there or there abouts with the 120whp.

Of course now I have a reliable output and an accurate car weight I can start using the Power gauge on my G-Tech Performance meter

I forgot the comment from the Dyno man regarding the lean range, apparently it is not running lean at 7000 revs.......................

They generally allow for 20% loss between wheel and flywheel figures, so 150bhp becoming 120whp sounds about right. I might have missed it, but it sounds like you're running a completely stock, unfettled Omex basemap, is that right? No two engines are the same, so the stock tunes are quite conservative. I'd imagine a tuner with 2-4 hours could easily find you another 10-15 ponies on that setup. I'm just putting in my ME221 setup now, hope to get it to the rollers to see what we can eek out of it shortly thereafter. A guy with a virtually identical setup (ST170 with homemade GSXR ITBs setup) recently made 189 at the flywheel, though it took the tuner 6 hours to get there. He's sending me his tune, and I'll have a guy here tinker with it, anything over 180 would be amazing. Then maybe I can drive the thing somewhere.. Have a look at this group maybe? www.facebook.com/groups/737420992943719
