Hi guys, has anyone built a rocket using the ST170 engine and gearbox ? If so is there anything in particular i need to look out for ? Any advice welcome. Cheers

the st170 6 speed gearbox is i think a Getrag. its a fairly big beasty, and will require some mod's to the linkage to get it to work. The st exhuast is a carefully designed and fabricated 4-2-1 system. The lack of space in rocket chassis can make mounting the CAT and silencer tricky. Have you already bought a donor car? will

Hiya Brownie, catch up with Rutter, Subevo and Stonic as these guys are fitting ST170 power.
Regards RTR

Haven't bought a donor as i could not find one but i have bought the st170 engine/gearbox/drive shafts. Going to buy the RTR exhaust system so that shouldn't be a massive problem.
Only yesterday i read a post on the allcarclub forum about the st150 and I'm a bit gutted to be honest, oh well.
My major concerns are the gear lever/ linkage and cooling. I'd love to hear from Rutter, Subevo and Stonic. Seen some posts about the subject already but still a bit confused to be honest.

I've done it in my Rocket. Roll restrictor mount needs modification and the trans mount on the left needs a little adjustment. Other than that, it is quite a bit bigger than the IB5 so positioning takes a little more patience.

hi brownie and mr vmv. im almost at the stage of fitting the wiring.so nearly ready to start for first time.
were building the sonic but much the same.
bought engine from thefordcentre its sold as a focus conversion package.by coincidence stonic done the same.£1000
differences/problems are.
gearchange but stonic has found a solution .my cables are at cable-tec at the moment being lengthened to 4.85 metres hopefully be back soon.£120
had to move engine mounts back about 50mm.stonic got away with minor adjustments.
now that my engine sits back i may not have needed to buy a 4 into 1 exhaust £140.it does come with a cat bypass pipe and locations for the sensors which ive still to get.
clutch pipe is slightly different.
throttle cable now done £46
wiring is going to be different.not sorted yet.
st170 driveshafts fitted no problem.stonic says he had to order a matched set of hubs and bearings.mines were no problem.
gearchange was worst problem to overcome and should now be ok.
engine has a few extra bits such as manifold runner control but ive found a place to mount it.
i know what you mean the st150 may be better.but hey now there will be more of us st170guys.
simples chk!!!
anything worrying you just ask

I put the fuel pump controller and the IMRC under the batt box. The shifting was probably the biggest headache of the whole build. Clocking the shift tower made it all come together.

VMV , what do you mean by the "fuel pump controller"? Electrics are my next job and I don't think I have seen that part. I have seen the emissions filter but planned not to use it (basiclly vents from tank to a carbon filter that is connected to the manifold with a vacume hose plus electrics).
I know the ST170 does not have a return line from fuel rail and electronics regulate the fuel pump for pressure but assumed that was done via ECU. Could you post a picture?
Many thanks

Brownie, welcome to the ST corner, clearly made up of people that don't take the easy option!
I had no hassle fitting the engine. If you look in the other ST170 threads I have posted some pictures. For the engine mount I elongated the hole appx 4mm just to ensure a bit more clearence between sump and lower chAssis rail. The gearbox mount needed no change and the lower mount was left untouched on the chassis as well. I just made a new triangular plate because the one that comes with the engine has a "step" that forces everything out of alignement. The ST manifold does not fit at all so bought a 4-1 alternative. If you use the RTR exhuast you will probably need to use the 1.8 manifold that is probably very restricted.
If you need any help just ask ... Have fun and like everyone says, take you time (except me as I would spent anybit of free time on it so it's "wife regulated"!)

hi all! first post on the forum! i bought a rocket at the MPH show and im looking to fit an st170 engine to it, does anyone know if the optional loom with the rocket will fit the st170 interface or will it need some doctoring? any pictures of any chasis mods required would also be a fantastic help! thanks alot guys!

Stonic, The returnless systems have a fuel pump controller that will adjust the voltage to the pump based on fuel rail pressure. When you turn the key to "On" you will hear the fuel pump spin for just a second, then it shuts off as the pressure is built up. In a return system, the fuel pump is always going with a restrictor placed after the fuel injectors. This restriction increases the fuel pressure that is used by the injectors. The ST170 with the returnless system will absolutely need the fuel pump controller (or Fuel Pump Driver Module) I think the stock location was under the rear seat close to the fuel tank/pump.

VMV, many thanks for that. I will dig through the two boxes of electrics and hope I find it. My parts came on a pallet so I have to hope it is complete. Thanks again

I found my pump controller so I am happy. It was right at the top of the box. Thanks for the pic VMV.
