Hi There
Here are a few pics of our winter project: The MEV Exocet.
It has been built by the mechanics at MX5 City in Doncaster as a winter project during the quieter months.
The donor car was a 1997 UK Spec 1.8 Mk1 MX-5, but several components were used from other MX-5s, such as a Torsen limited slip diff off a Eunos, manual steering rack, suspension components off a (less rusty) import model, etc.
As we weren't sure what effect the different weight would have on the standard Mazda suspension, we opted for fully adjustable GAZ dampers with matched coil springs, so we could easily set up the ride height and damping once the car was on the road.
Whilst we had the suspension components stripped down for painting, we fitted new Polybushes all round (nice shiney orange ones to match the bodywork ). The alloys are Team Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2 16x7 with Yokohamas fitted.
For a bit more performance and bling, we fitted a nice stainless four branch manifold, that just happened to be lying around the workshop, coupled to a modified IL Motorsport twin exit stainless performance exhaust system.
All-in-all the build has been very straightforward, considering it's the first one we've attempted, with very few problems, which is testament to the quality of the MEV product. Everything has fitted together with only minor adjustments here and there. My only critisism is the vagueness of the assembly instructions, but given that this was one of the first few off the production line, I am sure that future instructions will be more detailed.
Final jobs now needed to complete the project include: 4 wheel laser aligning, finalise the position of the mirrors, try and get the car through the IVA inspection!
I think the car needs a nice black stripe down the bodywork to break up all that orange. What do you think?
All being well we hope to take the car to Mallory this thursday (24th Feb) for a full shake down and to see how it performs, so I will let you know later how we get on.
Best regards
Martin
